🌎Why does Earth have seasons? What does the autumn equinox mean?
These were two of the questions we investigated this past week at EarthChild!
Our students discovered that seasons aren’t caused by how close or far Earth is from the Sun. Instead, they are connected to Earth’s 23.5° tilt and the way our planet travels around the Sun. ☀️🌎
As Earth orbits the Sun, its tilt changes the angle and amount of sunlight different parts of our planet receive throughout the year. This relationship between Earth’s tilt, orbit, and sunlight is what creates our seasons.
We also explored the autumn equinox, which is a special moment when Earth’s position around the Sun creates nearly equal amounts of daylight and nighttime around the world.
Working in small groups through hands-on exploration and discovery gives students the opportunity to build an understanding of the systems and patterns that shape our planet.
At EarthChild, we spend our days immersed in nature, asking questions, making discoveries, and learning together about how our amazing Earth works. 🌎
