It's time to take advantage of some Free Avalanche Rescue Practice put on by the nonprofit San Juan Field School/Telluride Avalanche School.

Join us to learn about avalanche rescue and practice the skills you already process. All ages and ability levels are welcome in this open drop-in practice!

This avalanche was remotely triggered by a rider after there were already multiple tracks on the adjacent slope. 3/13/2022

In Colorado, most avalanche accidents occur when the avalanche danger rating is either Moderate (Level 2) or Considerable (Level 3) (Logan and Greene 2018).

A Moderate (Level 2of5) danger rating can mean different things depending on the avalanche problem we are managing. It is important to read past the color on the infographic and understand the avalanche problems and their most likely distribution. For example, the avalanche danger scale states at Moderate (Level 2of5) danger, you can find small avalanches in specific areas; or large avalanches in isolated areas. In Colorado, we often find ourselves with a buried persistent weak layer that slowly becomes less reactive over time. This is our current scenario. The likelihood of triggering an avalanche is decreasing; however, it is still possible to trigger an avalanche, and the subsequent slide will be large and dangerous. Eleven people were caught in avalanches in Colorado since it started to snow again on March 3. Through a combination of good partner-rescue skills and a lot of luck, thankfully nobody was killed. Unfortunately, this streak of close calls and everyone going home at the end of the day cannot last. Backcountry users need to stop getting caught in avalanches. It’s up to you and your group to stop that. It’s a weekend of nice weather and a dangerous snowpack. A deadly combination.

Throughout the state, the most dangerous slopes are northerly and east-facing slopes. This is where thick slabs from our late February and March storms sit over a very weak layer of snow, just waiting for a trigger. There are also wet avalanche issues today and newly formed slabs from wind-drifted snow. It’s complex out there with numerous concerns. Travel cautiously and heed the advice of your forecast in the forecast for your zone at Colorado.gov/avalanche
