When Grade 2 public school student Gabe came to Savvy Gurls in February, spelling was a challenge. He came every two weeks eager to learn and determined to improve! We reviewed some grammar, worked on the words he misspelled, and made sure he understood their meanings, too. His hard work paid off!

In late May, his mom sent this wonderful text:

“On his last two spelling tests, he got 13/15 and 12/15 and 10/10 on both vocab tests. He’s doing fantastic!”

And a big shout-out to his parents, who worked with him at home and were such an important part of his progress!

And Gabe had another BIG goal. His parents told him that if he improved his spelling, he could play flag football in the fall, something he had been dreaming about.

He truly earned his way onto that flag football field.

Now he’s officially registered to play!

Gabe recently celebrated his 8th birthday and the start of Grade 3. We surprised him with these fantastic football birthday balloons from Party Express Tehachapi. Thank you, Doreen, for helping make his special surprise extra special!

Congratulations, Gabe! We are so proud of you! Now go tackle Grade 3 and have a ball on that football field! Puns absolutely intended!!! 🏈⭐

As we begin a new school year, we’re proudly celebrating the incredible progress our students made this past year.

Every one of our students showed improvement on their spring assessments!

These accomplishments belong first and foremost to the children who worked hard, kept trying, and DID NOT GIVE UP!! Their success also belongs to the families who encouraged them and partnered with us along the way.

Tutoring is much more than the hour we spend together. We meet your child where they are, whether that means closing learning gaps, building skills or helping with homework.

We look forward to being a part of your child’s learning journey this school year!

Heartland Families: September tutoring orders are due TONIGHT, August 15th, at midnight. You can find us in Procurify under Savvy Gurls Art & Tutoring.

Happy First Day of School!

Today, Facebook feeds are filled with proud parents showing off their first-day-of-school photos with smiling faces and new backpacks! :)

Our Little Sprouts Art class started a little early yesterday! And apparently pink was the unofficial color of our Back-to-School celebration!

We took a break from painting to create colorful tissue-paper beach balls, followed by pizza, treats and, of course... OREO COOKIE CAKE!!

There was plenty of creating, eating, laughing and silliness before it was back to the serious business of school today!

And while school starting may feel like summer is over... not at Little Sprouts Art! Next up are some refreshing summer treats the girls chose for our August painting. Summer isn't giving up its paintbrush quite yet!

🎨 A few Little Sprouts Art openings:
Tuesdays 4 PM: 2 seats — all-girls class
Tuesdays 2:30 PM: 2 seats — all-boys class

Monthly Cost:
$110, includes materials
4x1 hour classes

Beginning in September, we're adding Saturday classes at 9 AM and 11 AM, because sometimes you just can't fit in fun during the school week!

Wishing all students a wonderful school year filled with new friends, new discoveries, creativity, confidence and plenty of reasons to smile! 💜

What a wonderful day at the Heartland Vendor Fair yesterday!

A heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the families who stopped by Savvy Gurls Art & Tutoring! I loved talking with so many parents, meeting new families and children, and seeing some of our current and former students, too.

I was so busy chatting with families that I know I missed the chance to say hello, or give a hug, to a few familiar faces who stopped by. Please know how touched I was that you came by!

A very special THANK YOU to the incredible Heartland staff for putting together such a welcoming and beautifully organized event. We are so grateful to be part of the Heartland community!

🇨🇦 And did you notice the Canadian flag? Heartland created such a fun passport activity for the children, with each vendor representing a different country. Since I was born and raised in Canada, I couldn’t resist choosing Canada for our booth! I had so much fun sharing a little bit of my Canadian roots and stamping passports throughout the morning.

Heartland Families: The next ordering deadline is Saturday, August 15. If you are considering tutoring, please reach out before submitting your order to reserve your preferred day and time. Some time slots are limited, and I’m happy to help you find one that works for your family.

🎨 Our Little Sprouts Art Classes, ages 5–10, are also open to Heartland and other public school families. Heartland instructional funds are no longer eligible for art classes this year, but Heartland families are absolutely welcome to join us privately.

Stay tuned this week as we share more of our students’ paintings and tutoring success stories and celebrate some very special AHA moments!

Thank you again for such a wonderful day. I left feeling incredibly grateful, blessed, and excited for the new school year ahead!!

Helpful Facebook Resources for Heartland & Homeschool Families

After speaking with several charter school moms over the past few weeks, I realized that some families were unaware of a few helpful Facebook resources available to them.

Here are a few:

Heartland Charter School Facebook Group
A great place to connect with other Heartland families and find helpful information and resources.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/HeartlandCharterSchool

Tehachapi Home-School Co-op
A local group for connecting with other homeschool families and learning about activities, events, and opportunities in the Tehachapi area.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/775716729136919

Greater Tehachapi Area Homeschoolers
Another wonderful local resource for connecting with homeschool families, sharing information, and discovering activities and opportunities in our community.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/513030422071372/

There can be a lot to navigate on the homeschool journey, and sometimes simply knowing where to find information and connect with other families can make things a little easier.

We hope you find these resources helpful!

Here’s to a wonderful new school year filled with learning, discovery and new friendships. And remember to take time for yourself and breathe!

Big cheers for Quinn – our hardworking Grade 4 math star!

Quinn has been tackling Grade 5 math this year, and his perseverance is truly something special. When a problem gets tough, he doesn’t give up—he sticks with it, works through it, and keeps going.

That determination paid off in a BIG way this Spring…Quinn moved from Grade 5 level in the Fall, all the way up to Grade 7 on his Star 360 Math Test! That is 2 grade levels! APPLAUSE!

Even though he can do amazing math in his head, he’s still learning something really important: mistakes are part of the journey, not the end of it.

Quinn, your effort, grit, and never-give-up attitude are what make you shine. We are so proud of you!

Enjoy those well-earned Goldfish treats - you’ve earned every bite!

Keep going, keep growing, and remember to be kind to yourself along the way.

Every week, I see so many amazing dads and grandpas dropping off, picking up, helping with homework, cheering from the sidelines, and doing all the little things that often go unnoticed. I notice!

Being a dad is about showing up, being present, offering support, and loving your children through every stage of life.

To all the dads, grandpas, stepdads, father figures, and the men who make a difference in a child's life, THANK YOU! Your impact is greater than you know.

To the dads and granddads I have the pleasure of seeing through tutoring and Little Sprouts Art, thank you for trusting me with a small part of your children's journey. It is truly an honor to watch them learn, grow, and shine.

Happy Father's Day! May you be spoiled as you truly deserve!

Cody finds his voice!

When I started working with Cody (Grade 4) last November, writing was not his favorite thing. He was a boy of very few words, and getting thoughts onto paper felt like a challenge.

Fast forward seven months...

Not only has Cody improved his writing (ELA) performance and advanced in grade-level skills, but his writing has grown in every way.

His word count has increased, his spelling and comprehension has improved, and his ideas are becoming more detailed, thoughtful, and engaging. His writing is actually much more interesting to read now!

But the moment that really stood out?

Last week, Cody told me he's starting to like writing.

That one sentence said everything.

His mom and I looked at each other with huge smiles because we both knew how big that moment was. Writing is a lifelong skill, and seeing Cody gain confidence while discovering enjoyment in the process is incredibly meaningful.

We are so proud of you, Cody. Your voice matters, your ideas matter, and we can't wait to see where your writing journey takes you next.
