Our 8th-grade science students in Ms. Curry's class recently got a hands-on look at geology in action!

A team from the Kansas Department of Transportation visited Shawnee Heights to share how geology plays a key role in everyday life and construction projects. Students learned how professionals study what's beneath the surface and why it matters.

The highlight? Seeing real equipment in action, including a core drill rig, and demonstrations of seismic testing methods used in the field.

We are always excited to provide experiences like this for our students, helping them explore potential career pathways while sparking curiosity about the world beneath their feet.

Stormont Vail is hosting their annual Sports Physicals Day on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm.
The event is open to all middle and high school student-athletes, and the physical will be valid for the 26/27 sports season. Each physical will cost $20 by cash, check, or card. Student athletes do not have to be active patients at Stormont Vail or Cotton O'Neil.

Current 8th-11th-grade students interested in trying out for the SHHS Thunderettes Dance Team are encouraged to attend the pre-audition clinics on February 11 and 18. These sessions are designed to help students prepare for tryouts by reviewing expectations and requirements and answering questions about what to work on leading up to tryout week.

The tryout clinic on March 10 will be when students learn the choreography they will perform at formal tryouts on March 12. Email Roberta Freeman at [email protected] with questions. Good Luck!
