Instructor Spotlight, Darlene Cockayne! We are so glad she keeps choosing to teach at LLCC Taylorville!
1. I am one of the instructors in the social sciences department. My favorite course to teach is Psychology 101.
2. The main thing I want my students to know is what goal has always been - Which is to create a classroom where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning from each other with kindness and respect. Psychology is a personal journey, and the best learning happens when everyone feels safe enough to stay curious. I hope my students come to see that psychology is everywhere around us — not just in textbooks, but in our thoughts, feelings, relationships, decisions, habits, workplaces, families, and daily experiences. The more we understand ourselves, others, and the world we live in, the more vibrant and meaningful psychology becomes. If my students walk away from my class seeing the world through this lens, then I've done what I aimed for.
3. Favorite food - I take after my grandmother... I am a bread and potato girl; I think that is the German/ English in my heritage.
4. One of my hidden talents as an instructor is turning complex information into something easy to understand. I enjoy breaking down difficult psychological concepts into everyday words and sharing real-life examples that help students see how the material fits into their own lives. Those ‘light bulb” moments when everything finally clicks—those are truly the most rewarding parts of teaching for me.
5. My favorite aspect of teaching at LLCC in Taylorville is the people. The community atmosphere allows me to connect with students on a deeper level, fostering strong, secure, and confident relationships—something I value greatly. Additionally, the LLCC staff's dedication to providing accessible, enjoyable, and positive education makes a significant difference, helping all students reach their goals. Being part of this community truly means a lot to me.
6. One of my absolute favorite things about being an instructor is seeing students grow not just academically, but also personally. I genuinely enjoy witnessing that moment when a tricky concept finally clicks, and students start to see how what they're learning relates to their own lives. Those little 'aha!” moments are so rewarding and special. During these times, their confidence blossoms, and they become eager to keep learning even after the semester ends—that’s truly wonderful to see! Remember, you've got this… Keep moving forward—that’s always my encouragement.
