to the day Israel Kamakawiwo'ol recorded his version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"

In 1988, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole called the recording studio at 3am and said he has to record a song right away. 15 minutes later, Israel arrived at the studio. The studio owner, Milan Bertosa said, "And in walks the largest human being I had seen in my life."

“I put up some microphones, do a quick sound check, roll tape, and the first thing he does is 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' He played and sang, one take, and it was over."

Today, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version, is the most requested one of this classic song.

Today would have been his 63rd Birthday. He was an American songwriter, musician and actor to name just a few of his many talents. He was a rare performer who could play, on a professional level, all the instruments he required in his music. Versatility was his trade mark. His early career began with funk & soul. However later on he would incorporate jazz, punk, heavy metal and hip hop into his music. His talents live on in his music.

Just in case you're not on Facebook, or don't see the post right away, Stu Fuchs will be doing a workshop and concert at Eastern Music, on Saturday, March 30, at 2:00.

Stu is great fun to work with, and will teach fun new techniques that can be applied to any level of playing, so whether you're a relatively new beginner or have been playing for a couple of years, you'll get a lot out of this. He's also a terrific musician, and his concert alone will be worth the ticket price.
