Hackley School Class of 1982

Hackley School Class of 1982 Alumni Day & Our 30th Reunion Will Be on Saturday, September 29th! Save the Date! In 1899, Mrs. Hackley Hall, as Mrs. Mrs.

Caleb Brewster Hackley, a leading supporter of the Unitarian movement, decided to give her summer mansion in Tarrytown, New York, for the purpose of creating a college preparatory boarding school for boys. The school would welcome students of diverse religious, economic, ethnic and national origin within an ethos shaped by the school's Latin motto, Iuncti Iuvamus, which we translate as, "United, W

e Help One Another." Hackley’s mansion had become known, was quickly outgrown by the needs of the new school. Hackley funded the purchase of a beautiful estate not far from Hackley Hall, which provided the grounds for the Hackley School that we know today. Construction began, and the first new buildings were in use by 1902. Over the main entrance was engraved the phrase that has represented the Hackley spirit for over a century -- “Enter Here To Be And Find A Friend.”

Larry Zelvin ’82, Captain, US Navy, Director, Incident Management, National Security Staff, The White House, recently visited with Hackley's "Government and Politics: US & World" class, taught by John Van Leer '65. Larry shared with John’s students insights into his work, as well as his passion for serving our country. Larry noted his gratitude to John and other teachers including Arthur Naething (pictured in the portrait behind John and Larry, which hangs in Goodhue Memorial Hall) who taught him how to write effectively, a skill which he utilizes each day in his work.
