About Hackley School

Hackley School is a nonsectarian coeducational K-12 independent school located in Tarrytown, NY intentionally committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community. A Hackley education embraces both the open exchange of ideas and learning from varying perspectives. We challenge and support our students to grow in character and scholarship, transcend individual

achievement, and redefine accomplishment. Founded as a boarding school in 1899, Hackley enrolls approximately 840 students, including about 30 five-day boarding students in grades 9 -12. Students experience joy in the classroom and make life-long connections with each other and with our dedicated faculty, 40% of whom reside on campus. Robust extracurricular programming on our 285-acre campus creates unique opportunities for each student to learn and grow beyond the boundaries of the school day. Hackley graduates have the knowledge and confidence to pursue their passions, and the drive to make a difference. Learn more about Hackley at www.hackleyschool.org. History

In 1899, Mrs. Caleb Brewster Hackley, a leading supporter of the Unitarian movement, decided to give her summer mansion in Tarrytown, New York, for the purpose of creating a college preparatory boarding school for boys. The school would welcome students of diverse religious, economic, ethnic and national origin within an ethos shaped by the school's Latin motto, Iuncti Iuvamus, which we translate as, "United, We Help One Another." Hackley Hall, as Mrs. Hackley’s mansion had become known, was quickly outgrown by the needs of the new school. Hackley funded the purchase of a beautiful estate not far from Hackley Hall, which provided the grounds for the Hackley School that we know today. Construction began, and the first new buildings were in use by 1902. Over the main entrance was engraved the phrase that has represented the Hackley spirit for over a century — “Enter Here To Be And Find A Friend.” The school became co-ed in 1970.

“As families embark on the college process, it is natural to feel overwhelmed by the complexity of applications, the pressure of decisions, and the weight of what can feel like life-altering choices,” writes Director of College Counseling Kassy Fritz in this month’s blog post.

“We see this every day, and we want families to know those feelings are understandable and deeply human. Perhaps the most important reframe we can offer is this: the college process is not merely a destination to reach, but an opportunity for growth, self-discovery and character development that will serve students well beyond high school.”

What better time than Teacher Appreciation Week to announce that Upper School History teacher and Senior Class dean Melissa Stanek '90 has been awarded this year’s Anton and Lydia Rice Inspirational Teaching Award!

The award is presented each year to a member of Hackley’s faculty who, in the estimation of the Senior Class, "has lit and sustained the fire of learning and inspiration, stimulated their intellectual curiosity, and inspired them in positive ways to seize the day and grasp the challenges they will face in the years ahead."

Congratulations, Mrs. Stanek!
