Setting up a laser cutter in your classroom or lab? Here's what to have sorted out before installation day:

✅ Dedicated electrical outlet (110V or 220V depending on wattage)
✅ A plan for venting or filtration
✅ A clean, dust-free area for the machine
✅ Coordination with your facilities team

Ventilation alone can be the difference between a smooth setup and a weeks-long delay. We cover both options — venting outside and filtration systems — in detail at the link.

If metal is part of your program — or you're thinking about adding it — it's worth understanding exactly what an Epilog laser can and can't do before you buy.

CO2 vs. Fiber. Coated vs. raw metal. What each system handles and where the tradeoffs are.

We put together a clear side-by-side breakdown so you know exactly what you're getting.

Building a budget for a laser cutter? Writing a grant? Trying to figure out whether 50W or 80W makes more sense for your program?

Before you compare spec sheets, it helps to understand what wattage actually changes in day-to-day use — and what it doesn't.

We put together a practical guide covering every wattage range, how each one performs in a classroom setting, and the questions that point you toward the right choice.

Myth: the cheapest Epilog laser is the best starting point for a school program.

Reality: the right starting point is the one that matches your actual workflow.

A $9,000 system and a $21,000 system can both be the right answer — depending on your materials, class sizes, and how fast projects need to move. Buying the lower number without understanding what you're trading off can cost more in the long run.

We broke down every factor that shapes Epilog laser pricing so you can make the comparison with full context.

Myth: laser cutters require proprietary software and a steep learning curve.

Not with Epilog.

Epilog lasers use a standard print driver — the same concept as sending a document to a paper printer. Design in the software your program already uses, send the file to the laser, adjust a few settings in the driver, and go.

No new platform to learn. No expensive software license to add to the budget. Just an extension of tools your students and instructors already know.

A lot of schools treat ventilation as an afterthought when buying a laser cutter. Something to figure out after the machine arrives.

That's the wrong approach.

Ventilation isn't optional — it's a required part of the system. And where you place the machine, whether you have exterior wall access, and what your facilities team will allow shape which option makes sense.

Planning for it early makes installation smoother and avoids the kind of surprises that delay a program getting up and running.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Allegheny Educational Systems booth at the PACTA 2026 Leadership Conference!

It was a pleasure connecting with CTE leaders from across Pennsylvania to discuss the future of career and technical education.

We enjoyed demonstrating innovative training solutions from our partners, including the Mitsubishi Electric RV-5 collaborative robot, TacMed Solutions realistic human and K9 trauma trainers, and the Simulation AB heavy equipment simulator. We also had great conversations about funding opportunities and ways schools can continue preparing students for high-demand careers.

We're grateful for the opportunity to share ideas, answer questions, and learn more about the incredible work happening in CTE programs across the Commonwealth.

If we didn't have a chance to connect—or if you'd like to continue the conversation—reach out to our team. We'd love to help you build engaging learning environments that prepare students for tomorrow's workforce.

Thank you, PACTA! We look forward to seeing you again next year.
