Reclaimed, Reconstructed, Reimagined

Cotton and linen fabrics, once part of something else, find a new life in this scarf.

Carefully selected reclaimed pieces are joined with flat-felled seams, creating a single layer that can be worn from either side. Nothing is hidden—the construction becomes part of the design, allowing color, texture, and pattern to shift with the way the scarf is worn.

I am drawn to the possibilities held within discarded cloth: the history of the fabric, the evidence of its former life, and the opportunity to give it another.

Marquette Explorer continues to evolve.

New fragments have found their way into the landscape—carefully cut pieces of vintage postage, including the Marquette Explorer stamp, the U.S. 6¢ stamp, an Illinois 6¢ stamp, and delicate roses cut from Finland’s 5¢ Independence Day stamp. Each small piece brings with it a suggestion of place, history, travel, and time.

The landscape is beginning to take on another dimension through the addition of tiny beads—tiger’s eye, turquoise, and pink alabaster—nestled into the emerging forms. Their subtle color and texture add another layer of discovery, allowing the surface to shift between textile, landscape, and collected artifact.

This is the heart of Collect • Explore • Create • Reflect: there is no rush toward a finished image. I collect, I experiment, I add, I step back, and I look again. The piece continues to tell me what it wants to become.

As I continue learning to upcycle precious scraps, another collection of hand-stitched brooches has come into being.

Tiny remnants of silk, cotton, linen, and vintage lace are carefully layered and stitched to create each small textile form before being nestled into handcrafted wooden settings—ovals, circles, and squares. Every fragment carries a history, finding new purpose through patient hands and thoughtful making.

Marquette Explorer is an evolving textile collage shaped through the materials and prompts found within the Collect • Explore • Create • Reflect Collection Packet (https://fechodesigns.etsy.com). Rather than beginning with a fixed image, the work unfolds gradually through collecting fragments, exploring their relationships, and allowing each addition to suggest the next. Press drying the radiating umbels from dill and parsley plants gathered from last year’s garden (and a few black-eyed Susan’s). These overwintered plants developed their seed heads earlier than this season’s new plantings, offering beautiful structures for printmaking. I’ll be incorporating them into monoprints and intaglio prints as resists, creating delicate textures, subtle embossing, and traces of the garden within the work.

Beginning with Curiosity- Spread everything out on a table. I did not start with composition- I sorted by color, texture, memory, or simply what catches caught my eye. Now, I am punching holes through the paper to hand-sew “lines.” Also adding value to the eco-dyed ground.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m carefully giving my grandmother’s doll a new body and set of clothes. Time left her fabric dry-rotted and her form filled with sawdust, fragile at every seam.

I’m restoring her with stitched repairs (petti-coats of cotton are original) and making sure the porcelain limbs are secure— much like the original maker once did by hand. A small act of mending, memory, and keeping family stories intact.

The fabric at the front is what is left of the body. Luckily, grandmother had already re-sewn cloths on another- so I could examine the “how-to.” The dress making is next.
