Meet Our Sisterhood
Selam '26, Ethiopia
When I first arrived at St. Margaret’s, everything felt unfamiliar. I was far from home, adjusting to a new culture, and trying to figure out how to live on my own for the first time. One of the hardest parts was learning how to manage things by myself without the comfort of family nearby. Over time, I grew stronger and more confident. I realized that I could take care of myself, make good decisions, and be independent. That growth didn’t happen overnight, but it started with small steps and support from the people around me. From the moment I arrived, there were people who guided me and made sure I didn’t feel lost.
Ms. Plumb was one of the first people who helped me settle in. She showed me my dorm, helped me get oriented, and was always kind and patient. Her support helped me calm down and feel safe in a new environment. The care I received from staff like her made a huge difference in my transition
I started to feel like I belonged at St. Margaret’s when I began to connect during school events and daily routines. Simple conversations turned into friendships, and unfamiliar places started to feel like home.
Since coming to St. Margaret’s, I've learned how to live on my own, manage my responsibilities and grow more confident. It’s helped me become more independent and prepared for life beyond school.
One thing that surprised me was discovering my passion for music. Before coming here, I never saw myself as someone who could be musical. But with encouragement and the chance to try new things, I found something I love- and that’s been life-changing.
If I had to describe St. Margaret’s in one word, I’d say "growing". Because even though everything hasn’t always been perfect, this place has helped me learn, mature, and take steps toward becoming the person I want to be.
