Twice a week, JSX has direct flights between Taos and Austin, Dallas, LA, and San Diego. Flights are under two hours, ✈️ no stops, via smooth riding jets (not prop planes), 💼 2 bags included, and cost $200-$450 each way. They fly out of airport private hangars so there’s minimal waiting in security and usually parking is right outside the lobby. And they have snacks 😍 on board.

Trail update!

Katie Raver led a NightWalk outside of Austin, Texas in October. The group saw a wild porcupine on the trail!

Fun facts and observations:

*Porcupines cannot shoot their quills

*Porcupines have long, quill-like white hairs that extend beyond the length of their actual quills, to make them appear larger. These quills are very visible and noticeable when NightWalking!

*Adult porcupines do not have many predators, are herbivores, and they are usually docile.

*All wild creatures should be treated with respect and careful awareness, and when people are using peripheral vision and have the accompanying minimal mind chatter, animals often perceive those people as other creatures or just another part of the night.

Even though the population is growing fast (which usually accelerates light pollution), the night skies are still dark enough in rural places of central Texas that we can NightWalk with stars.

This is why we can still NightWalk in rural parts of central Texas:

All five of Texas’ International Dark-Sky Communities are found in the KXAN viewing area — Dripping Springs, Horseshoe Bay, Fredericksburg, Blanco and Wimberly Valley.
