Rule #2 of Singing: Raising the Soft Palate

First of all, what is the soft palate?

The soft palate is the area where the nasal passage meets the roof of the mouth. When the soft palate is raised, it blocks the cavity between the nasal passages and the mouth. When it is lowered, the passage is open. One example of the passage being open is like when one gets salt water from the ocean in their nose and then it goes down their throat. The water travels through the nasal passage-way at the soft palate and then into the mouth and down the throat.

Why do we need the soft palate raised when singing?

In lifting the soft palate, we block the nasal passage that connects to the roof of the mouth at the palate. This allows all air when singing to be sent out through the mouth and not leak into the nose. Sending all the air out this way allows the tone of the voice to be stronger and fuller, and helps the singer to sing with the full core of their own unique sound, which is one of the things that makes the voice so special. It also allows for more resonance.

Here is a video of Miss Gianna singing a German Art Song called “Der Gärtner” by Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) at her Masters Recital at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music this past April 2025!

Translation of the Text by Richard Stokes:

“Oh her favorite mount, as white as snow,
the loveliest princess rides down the avenue.

On the path her horse prances so sweetly along,
The sand I scattered glitters like gold.

You rose-coloured bonnet, bobbing up and down,
O throw me a feather discreetly down!

And if you in exchange want a flower from me,
take a thousand for one, take all in return!”

Rule #1 of Proper Singing Technique: Breathing!

Yes-we all breathe to live-however, there is a specific technique of breathing needed when singing to help support the sound and take tension away from the vocal chords when making sound.
During inhalation, air always goes into the lungs in our upper bodies, however singers most often focus on the use of their LOWER body when singing with proper breath technique, including the use of muscles such as the abs, lower abs, ribs, and back muscles.
