Fear is fast!
I’ve rarely met a person who hasn’t had the following generalized experience…
You wake up one day with an odd ache in some part of your body. (To point out the absurdity in all this we’ll say big toe.) The ache persists throughout the day.
Day two ache remains. There is only one logical course of action, Dr. Google!
Usually you’re only in this Dr.’s office for five to ten minutes before you get the diagnosis. It’s a rare form of rapidly spreading cancer!
Now Dr. Google also mentioned it could be a few things including a slight sprain due to the five miles a day you run. (Giving you the benefit of the healthy lifestyle doubt here.) But, no!
All your brain computes is it must be cancer!
Fear is fast!
It starts small. It plants itself in one brief, tiny connection between a couple of neurons in our brain, and in just minutes it overruns all three pounds of our intellectual capacity.
From there it wreaks havoc on our physiological system and we may or may not (often not) find our way back to equilibrium for the day.
It happened to me this morning.
Sitting on the couch in the garage, watching the sunrise, drinking espresso, and enjoying getting my mind into the proper place for the day through some spiritual reading.
My 17 year old comes out and announces he’s taking the car and headed to Chick-fil-A.
He cranks it up, and I think about a little funny noise the car has been making. (Fearful neuron connection complete.)
He then sits idol in the driveway for a bit longer getting his phone connected for some jams.
Second fearful thought occurs. What if he accidentally puts the car in drive instead of reverse?
I would have to jump off the couch quickly, and at my decrepit age, would likely fall, sending me hurling into the wall where some out of place pointy object would pe*****te my skull resulting in immediate demise with no need of an autopsy.
Welcome to the underworld of my interior insanity!
This also confirms my mother’s early childhood diagnosis of me as melodramatic.
Keep in mind this fantastical, fear based mental movie all took place in the midst of my regular morning journey into positivity!
Now I know I’m not the only crazy one out there. Maybe just one of the few to be crazy enough to admit it this way on social media.
If you’re honest, then you’d admit that fear can do a quick number on you too. (Maybe not at the dead in garage level, but your imaginative scenarios are troubling nonetheless.)
Thankfully, within the last ten years I have discovered simple practices that can reset my brain within a matter of minutes. It’s not to say I use them all the time, but they’re at least in my life hack toolbox.
The good thing means that when fear works fast within me (as it always will within all of us), if I have the wherewithal, I can pull out a simple practice and be back to a more inviting and positive space in a matter of no time.
There’s no reason to let fear control our lives. While beneficial in small doses, it is a deadly toxin to our creativity and productivity as well as our relationships and community, if allowed to manifest for any length of time.
If you ever want to chat or know more about some simple practices that can get you back on the positive path, then feel free to PM me.
Would love to share!
Have a great day free from fear!
