What Does a Smile Mean in Montessori?

In Montessori, a child’s smile means more than happiness. It can be one of the first signs that a child is beginning to feel safe, connected, confident, and at home in the environment.

For some children, this means settling into school for the very first time. For others, it may mean entering a new classroom, meeting a new teacher, or becoming comfortable with new expectations and routines. And for the children who have already found their place in the Primary classroom, that smile reflects something equally beautiful, the confidence to explore, choose their work, build relationships, and take pride in what they can do.

Every child reaches this point in their own time. Some find their rhythm quickly; others need more patience, reassurance, and trust.

So when we see that beautiful smile, we know something important is happening…….And sometimes, that is the most important work of all.

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year at Montessori Academy of South Tampa!

Last week was our first official week of the new school year. Our goal was to help each child feel comfortable and at home while becoming familiar with our thoughtfully prepared environment, daily routines, and the freedom to explore and discover.

Practical Life connects the classroom to everyday life, nurturing independence, concentration, coordination, and confidence. Sensorial experiences refine the senses and prepare the mind for mathematics, language, science, geography, and so much more.

Through purposeful work, uninterrupted work cycles, movement, and meaningful connections, children begin building the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.

A beautiful beginning to a wonderful year ahead.

Before we begin sharing the memories and milestones of a new school year, we’d like to take one last look back at our wonderful kindergarten class.

These photos capture a glimpse of what Maria Montessori called the Year of Fruition, the culmination of years of purposeful learning, growth, and discovery. Each child brought unique strengths, talents, and personality to our classroom, making this a truly special group.

At MAST, we are proud to have been part of their journey. Thank you to our kindergarten families for trusting us with your children’s education and allowing them the time to develop into confident, independent learners.

As they begin their elementary years, we wish each of them continued success, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. We are so proud of all they have accomplished and can’t wait to see all they will achieve in the years ahead.

As we conclude another wonderful Montessori Summer Program, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of our families for your participation, enthusiasm, and continued support throughout the summer. This final week celebrated the importance of healthy bodies in motion as children explored a variety of sports and fitness activities that encouraged movement, coordination, teamwork, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. Through conversations about healthy habits and active living, they discovered how caring for their bodies helps them grow stronger and more confident. A special thank you to everyone who joined us for our Field Day celebration and helped make it such a memorable experience. We are grateful for the trust you place in us each day and wish all of our families a safe, happy, and restful end to the summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another wonderful school year!

Last week, our classrooms celebrated the wonderful world of literature through classic stories, meaningful storytelling, and activities that nurtured language, imagination, and a love of books. Children explored different literary genres while discovering how stories teach, inspire, and connect us.

A special thank you to our amazing teachers, who collaborated by visiting different classrooms to share their favorite books and create memorable reading experiences for the children. We are also grateful to our families for their continued support and participation throughout the week.

To conclude our thematic week, many of our students joined in the fun by dressing as their favorite book characters and bringing their books to school. It was a wonderful celebration of creativity, literature, and the many ways stories enrich a child’s learning journey.

What an inspiring week of Art Appreciation & Creative Reuse!

Our children discovered that creativity has no limits as they transformed everyday recycled materials into meaningful works of art. Through hands-on exploration, imagination, and collaboration, they also developed a deeper appreciation for caring for our environment.

A sincere thank you to our incredible teachers, whose enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication made this week truly special. Their commitment brought each classroom to life and provided rich, meaningful experiences for our children. Thank you as well to our families for embracing Fun Friday and supporting your children’s wonderful recycled creations!

What an incredible week of discovery at MAST! Our classrooms came alive as children explored the rich history and cultures of the Egyptian, Roman, Incan, and Chinese civilizations through hands-on Montessori experiences. Our teachers went above and beyond, preparing engaging demonstrations that brought each empire to life, inspiring curiosity and meaningful conversations. In our older classrooms, children also enjoyed age-appropriate videos that provided concrete and fascinating introductions to these ancient civilizations, helping deepen their understanding of history and the world around them.

A big thank you to our wonderful families for embracing the experience and participating in our themed dress-up day. Your support, together with the dedication and creativity of our teachers, made this an unforgettable week of learning, exploration, and cultural appreciation. We are so grateful for our amazing school community!

This year marks the 250th anniversary of our nation—a meaningful milestone that gave special purpose to this week’s theme, U.S. Symbols & Independence. Throughout the week, our students explored the history and meaning behind America’s treasured symbols through hands-on Montessori experiences, stories, music, art, and discussions that nurtured an appreciation for freedom, unity, service, and community.

We concluded the week with our annual Patriotic Parade, where each classroom presented a decorated parade wagon created by our teachers. It was a wonderful way for the children to celebrate everything they had learned while sharing in the spirit of this special week.

Thank you to our amazing teachers for the time, creativity, and care they invested in making this celebration so memorable, and to our wonderful families for dressing their children in patriotic attire and helping us honor this important occasion. Moments like these create lasting memories while helping our children develop a love and appreciation for the history, traditions, and values that unite us as a nation.

Last week at MAST our classrooms were filled with curiosity, discovery, and joyful exploration as we celebrated Scientific Discovery & Hands-On Experimentation. Through meaningful, hands-on experiences, our children observed, predicted, questioned, and explored the world around them, building a deeper understanding of cause and effect while strengthening their problem-solving skills. A special thank you to Miss Lilian for visiting every classroom and sharing engaging, hands-on science activities that inspired wonder and excitement in our students. We also extend our appreciation to all of our families for their enthusiastic participation in Fun Friday, your support and involvement help make these learning experiences even more meaningful!

What a wonderful week we had at MAST as we explored the exciting world of Theater & Performing Arts!
Our students enjoyed storytelling, music, movement, dramatic play, and opportunities to build confidence through self-expression. We ended the week with a special Talent Showcase featuring some of our Room 5 students, who proudly shared their songs, dances, poems, and unique talents with their friends and teachers.
It was also so much fun seeing our students and staff dressed as iconic performers, bringing creativity and excitement to our school community!
