ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | MICKETT AND STACKHOUSE

Meet the Tampa Bay-based artists behind two of our fall exhibitions, one of which opens tonight, 6-8 p.m., at Hotel Haya. Hope to see you there!

"We are curious about the world: how it works, what happens in it, and how we can make it better. Since we cannot do everything, we focus on water. We use our experience, our research into science, and our ability as artists to tell a visual story about water, ways to mitigate climate change, and the world to which we aspire. The latter is crucial. If we are not moved by what we desire, there can be no action. Science tells us that the ocean and the atmosphere are getting warmer and warmer. This triggers changes in ocean currents, in our weather, in more forest fires, more storms, risks to our water supply, and, in general, a change to our way of life. Science cannot be replaced by art, but art is a conduit for science. It’s a portal. For example, people will say -I love those trees you paint but why do you? We say that they are mangroves and then tell them how important they are for our planet’s and, hence, our well-being. Art is key to creating inquisitiveness. With curiosity, there is learning and action. Let’s be the change." -Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse

Altered hours today at Gallery 221 Dale Mabry. Join us tonight from 6-8 PM in Ybor City for the opening reception of “Aspiring Water” at Hotel Haya’s Valencia Foyer. Link in bio for address and to RSVP!

Both exhibitions, at Gallery 221 and Hotel Haya, feature work by Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse and are in conversation with one another. Exploring our environmental vulnerability within a changing and uncertain future, “Aspiring Water” focuses on our relationship with waterways, while “Endangered Refuge” highlights the vulnerability of endangered whales. Together, the exhibitions reflect on our relationship to the natural world as a source of beauty, resilience, and refuge, while emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship.

Our Ybor Campus Gallery 114 will stay open on our typical Thursday schedule— 11 AM to 7 PM.
