Here's a number worth sitting with. York County's four school districts now have 289 National Board Certified Teachers.

That growth didn't happen on its own. The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement has worked directly with Rock Hill and Fort Mill School Districts to help more teachers pursue certification.

And it's paying off where it matters most. Suzanne Koty with CERRA says South Carolina is seeing a real trend among early-service teachers; fewer of them are leaving the profession.

National Board Certification asks teachers to demonstrate advanced knowledge in their subject through a multi-part assessment built by teachers for teachers. Koty says the certification is a factor in keeping those teachers in the classroom for the long haul.

As she put it, "We know the amount of teachers who are certified is higher compared to all teachers."

That's what investing in teachers looks like.
