USF Black Heritage Month

Black Heritage Month (formerly Black Emphasis Month) has served as one of the richest and most celebrated traditions at the University of South Florida.

Throughout the month of February, Black Heritage Month promotes great camaraderie amongst the USF and Tampa Bay community. Lectures, films, art exhibits and cultural presentations are just a few examples of the types of educational and social programs that will be presented during University of South Florida's Black Heritage Month.

When Erica Daley ’96 was a first-year student at USF, she received a scholarship that helped pay for her education. A descendent of enslaved people, the scholarship donor and her entire family had received a college education ever since slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865. Although Daley never met her donor, she was inspired by that story of perseverance and generosity.

“My donor paved the way for me. I realized it was important to start planting seeds and support young people advancing themselves, their family and our society,” said Daley.

In 2016, the same year the Black Leadership Network (BLN) was founded, Daley created the BLN/Erica G. D. Daley Scholarship for minority first-generation college students. “I wanted to make sure there was a fund geared specifically for them,” said Daley who was a first-generation college student herself.

Now the chair of the USF Black Alumni Society, Daley hopes that the recipients of her scholarship pay it forward by planting seeds for those who come after them.

Say his name, Ahmaud Arbery. He was violently shot and murdered while on a jog through his Georgia neighborhood and recent cell phone footage has surfaced showing the deadly acts of racism by white supremacy. [Trigger warning, we do not advise watching the video]

His young life ended too soon due to continued profiling against black men. We must eradicate the deeply ingrained white supremacist ideology within our nation.

In solidarity, there is a national campaign for a 2.23 mile run/jog/walk on Friday, on what would have been Ahmaud’s birthday. We ask you to join in your own virtual way, and if you wish to show your solidarity, you can post a photo or video of you walking in the comments below or on your own platforms. Be safe, don’t walk alone. You can still walk and keep 6ft of physical distance from one another.
