The Gemmell Lab
Dr. Brad Gemmell is an assistant professor at USF-Tampa, specializing in marine ecology, fluid dynamics, and animal behavior.
Run by Dr. Brad Gemmell, the marine ecology and fluid dynamics lab at the University of South Florida (USF) researches animal-fluid interactions and how these influence biological factors.

Check out Nils' first publication about anguilliform locomotion across a natural range of swimming speeds. Here, we compared the swimming kinematics, hydrodynamics, and metabolic activity of juvenile coral catfish (Plotosus lineatus) across relative swimming speeds spanning two orders of magnitude to investigate the benefits of eel-like locomotion:
Anguilliform Locomotion across a Natural Range of Swimming Speeds Eel-like fish can exhibit efficient swimming with comparatively low metabolic cost by utilizing sub-ambient pressure areas in the trough of body waves to generate thrust, effectively pulling themselves through the surrounding water. While this is understood at the fish’s preferred swimming speed, ...

Marine science is not just about theoretical knowledge. Carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work all come into play as well. Today we built a light stand for one of our fiberglass tanks.

A little copepod freshly caught this morning...
Yesterday during our jellyfish collection trip at Lido Key, we found this graceful swimmer, the Mottled Sea Hare. Sea hares are a marine slug that can grow to over a foot long and secrete purple ink when scared!
