Think of your ribs as more of a basket than a 'bone-bolted-to-bone "cage."' To breath, the ribcage has to be flexible.
This stretch is so good for opening up the intercostal muscles between the rib bones. Use a bolster under you for a gentle side bend and watch as all four sides of the ribs expand & then soften with each complete breath.
Mmmm, that's better.
