Upper Primary teachers surprised students on Friday with a twist on a familiar fairy tale, asking them "who's the real Cinderella?" The teachers dressed as Cinderella characters found in several cultures and pointed out the similarities and differences in the story. The skit kicked off the yearlong unit of inquiry, “How We Express Ourselves," which prompts first and second graders to explore the central idea that a culture can express its values and beliefs through literature. 👑

Third- and fourth-grade classes came together in Gatlin Hall today for an Intermediate Leadership Retreat designed to prepare the students to step into their roles as elementary school leaders. Teachers and administrators prepared lessons, videos and activities that sparked discussion and reflection on what leaders do and how they act toward others. Students worked in small groups with representatives from different classes and grade levels. Each student also was paired with a wellness buddy from another grade who they will partner with throughout the year! It was a fun morning focused on community building, teamwork and connection!

Electives are underway at Middle School, which means surprises are in store behind every classroom door! Electives allow students to discover and strengthen skill sets that fall outside of a traditional academic schedule. With a variety of classes to choose from, students can pursue an interest or hobby or try something completely different. This trimester, they are caring for the science lab’s residents in Animal Husbandry, learning to “Invest Like a Pro,” training hard in strength and conditioning, curling up with their favorite books, creating mixed media crafts, exploring artistic techniques in Creative Creations, stepping into virtual reality and so much more. The goal of Corbett Prep Middle School electives is to provide another opportunity for students to shine!

First and second grade took their learning down to City Hall yesterday to learn more about Tampa’s history and its symbols. Upper Primary students met Mayor Jane Castor, hopped on a trolley and enjoyed an informative walking tour. The trip ties into the International Baccalaureate unit “Who We Are,” which examines how symbols can represent the values and principles of people or government. Students are learning about how symbols provide meaning, the history and significance of symbols and how symbols reflect a place’s culture. The next time these students are downtown, they will have lots of interesting information about Tampa to point out to their parents!

Sometimes it helps to put your math skills on display! This week, the third-grade Navigators applied the Read-Draw-Write process to solve multiplication word problems. Working in teams, they solved problems together on large chart paper, showing their thinking and strategies. Students then participated in a gallery walk to examine how their classmates approached the problems. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn new strategies, compare different ways of thinking and see that there can be more than one way to solve a problem!

In eighth-grade science, students conducted their first scientific investigation using candles from last year’s Candlelight Ceremony. Students investigated what candles use as fuel by making detailed observations of their candles prior, during and after burning. They analyzed qualitative and quantitative data to develop evidence-based explanations while becoming familiar with IB MYP rubrics and using established criteria to evaluate their scientific work and understanding. This will help them throughout the year to meet the rigorous expectations of eighth-grade science in preparation for high school!

Kindergartners explored where and how people live, work and play today as an introduction to their upcoming International Baccalaureate unit “Who We Are: Communities!” The students are studying the idea that the structure of a community can meet people’s needs and wants, and they will be discussing structures of communities as well as the responsibilities and contributions of community members. Teachers arranged for students to tour interactive stations where they could try out different community roles. They talked to staff members on campus about their jobs, they rode bikes to unwind with friends, they cared for animal community members as veterinarians, they hosted a family dinner and they used VR to browse a grocery store!
