Many coastal communities are embracing living shorelines as a cost effective method of protecting against erosion caused by storms, boat wakes, and normal tidal action. Living shorelines have the added benefit of providing increased habitat for coastal wildlife, both aquatic and terrestrial, as compared with "hardened" shorelines like seawalls.

Pinellas County residents, get all your burning questions about water answered by enrolling in the Florida Waters Stewardship Program, with 6 biweekly classes beginning January 30th at Brooker Creek Preserve in Tarpon Springs.
This program is patterned on the Florida Master Naturalist Program and uses expert presentations, online explorations, experiential learning, field experience in watershed science, and communication skills training to help participants become good stewards of our water resources.

The Pinellas County Health Department tested the water at its beaches and all samples showed that bacteria levels are low and the water is safe. However, work is continuing to restore dunes and remove hurricane debris, so people are encouraged to stay off the beach for the time being, to give public works an opportunity to finish the job.
