Simple. Statistical facts. Some things are just fact, and if we recognize them as such, we can position ourselves to win. If you stay married, your kids have a better chance of staying married. If you exercise regularly, you’ll control your weight and prevent disease easier. Or, one of my favorites, if you don’t use credit cards, you stand a zero percent chance of going into credit card debt....

Susan Wise Bauer, in The Well-Trained Mind, notes “As you’ve no doubt noticed, Latin is not the defining element of a classical education” (188). No, it’s not, but it is a necessary element and here’s why. There are plenty of other things that could be considered “defining elements” of a classical education, such as it’s aims to cultivate virtue in students, or to help them learn to distinguish between good and bad, true and false, beautiful and mundane, harmony and discord....

Earlier, I discussed how a classical education is a humanizing education. It teaches a person how to think and speak with those around him, it nurtures him instead of constantly assessing him, and it feeds him with books and ideas that will nourish his intellect and soul. Today we’re going to talk about another characteristic of a classical education: those who practice classical education view it as a path....

We are a long way removed from the first classical educators of antiquity. For us, a large part of beginning the work of educating our children classically is asking in the first place, “What is classical education?” This question reminds me of sitting in my freshman Intro to Religion class and listening to various students attempt to define the word “religion.” (We never did reach a satisfactory definition in class.) Sometimes the more foundational the word is, the harder it is to define....

As early as a month ago, a lot of moms in my local homeschooling group began talking about feeling overwhelmed and discussing strategies of how to do everything that needs to get done in a day. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear non-homeschooling moms have a similar conversation. Some things struck me during this conversation that I wanted to share with you, especially if you’re dealing with feeling overwhelmed as the semester comes to a close and Christmas is only a few days away....
