Community Stepping Stones Empowering our community & enriching the lives of youth through the arts!

Through the gracious support of Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa, Community Stepping Stones sits on one of the most beautiful and historic pieces of ground in the Sulphur Springs community. At-risk youth in this community frequently suffer from extraordinary stress that is counterproductive to their ability to learn. Physical and financial immobility limits the development of their socia

l and life skills. Research shows that the performance of the neural pathways of these young people actually decreases as a result of economic and social stress. However, the same research also shows that when these young people are given the means and opportunity to creatively express what matters to them most,
their neural performance rapidly improves. Through a proven and effective integrated arts learning curriculum for Sulphur Springs youth, CSS helps young people gain control over their lives, cultivate positive habits, learn new problem-solving skills, and be inspired to make positive personal choices �

Our students explored the connection between sound and visual art with a Kandinsky-inspired activity! They listened to different sounds and turned what they heard into lines, shapes, and colors. Once their drawings were filled with sound-inspired lines, they brought them to life with watercolor!

Our CSS students got outside and became little citizen scientists for the Great Southeastern Pollinator Census! 🌿🐝

We spent time in our garden counting and observing the critters helping our plants grow. This was such a fun way for our students connect with nature, practice science, and see just how busy our garden really is!

We had an amazing keeping it cool at the Dream Builder’s Mission Back to School Giveaway on Saturday! It was a blast talking with families about heat, cooling, and giving out resources to those in need.

As a team, we were able to distribute over 100 art boxes and cooling packs to families and volunteers. We also put the infrared temperature gun to work! 🌡️ We tested different surfaces around the event and were surprised by just how hot they got:

🔥 Metal table: 140°F
☀️ Tarp: 106°F
🌱 Ground: 102°F
🌳 Shaded surface: 91°F

It was a simple activity, but it got people talking about how heat affects our everyday spaces and our community. And yes… it was HOT!

Most importantly, we loved connecting with families, sharing these resources, and creating these conversations within the community. Thank you to everyone who came out!
