USF’s CyberHerd delivered impressive wins at this weekend’s DEF CON in Las Vegas – earning top finishes in several competitions – one of the world’s largest cybersecurity events.

The CyberHerd placed first in an attack-and-defend competition during the U.S. Cyber Con charity competition and first place in the ICS Village CTF, overcoming a deficit of more than 1,600 points to climb from near the bottom of the standings and beat 31 teams for the win.

The team also placed second in the Adversarial Village CTF, beating out 70 teams.

But that wasn’t all! CyberHerd member Michelle McAveety added another strong finish, taking second place in a jeopardy-style competition hosted by Hack The Box. Fagan Afandiyev also made CyberHerd history by presenting a talk on several Windows vulnerabilities he discovered, becoming the first team member to speak at DEF CON.

And the CyberHerd’s impact continues following graduation with Sanaan Wani, a former CyberHerd member who graduated from USF in May. Wani placed first in the AI Village CTF, beating more than 360 teams.

Congratulations to the entire CyberHerd! 🤘
