This November, Hillsborough County voters will decide whether the Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools should change from an appointed position to a partisan elected office.
Leading Hillsborough County Public Schools is a significant executive responsibility. The superintendent oversees one of the largest school districts in the country, serving more than 200,000 students, approximately 22,000 employees and 233 schools, with a nearly $4 billion budget.
HEF believes a district of this size and complexity requires experienced, professional leadership. Under the current appointed model, the elected School Board can establish qualifications, thoroughly vet candidates and select a leader with the experience necessary to lead the district. The Board is then responsible for evaluating the superintendent and holding that individual accountable for results.
The proposed change would replace this process with a countywide partisan election every four years.
HEF believes maintaining the appointed model supports professional leadership, clear accountability and a continued focus on doing what is best for Hillsborough County students, teachers and schools.
