If I could hand a parent just one question to ask at home, it might be this: how many more do we need to make 10?

It sounds simple, but it is powerful. Say a kid has 8. We ask, how many more to make 10? They find the 2, and those ten ones become one bar of ten. And we do not stop there. We just run the same move again: another group, another how many more to make 10, another bar. Two bars of ten, and the child is looking at 20.

That is the engine of our whole number system, hiding in one little question. Ten ones make a ten, ten tens make a hundred, the same trade all the way up.

Ever watch your kid grind through subtraction, all the erasing and borrowing and crossing out, and think there has to be a faster way? There is.

The way most of us learned is to write it down, cross out, move a ten over, then take away. It works, but that is a lot of steps and a lot of places to slip.

Here is the quicker exchange. Take 46 minus 8. Pull a ten out of the 46, and if your kid just knows that 10 minus 8 is 2, they drop that 2 right in. 46 minus 8 becomes an easy 38, no crossing out at all.

Not every subtraction problem needs borrowing, and teaching kids to spot which kind they are looking at is a quiet superpower.

Take 46 minus 32. Look at each column and ask one thing: is the top number big enough? Ones: 6 minus 2, yes, that is 4. Tens: 4 minus 3, yes, that is 1. Answer 14, no borrowing, no crossing out. It just subtracts straight across.

This is subtraction without regrouping. When a kid checks each column first, they stop borrowing out of habit and only use the make-a-ten move when they actually need it. The rest of the time, they can see the problem is already easy.

When a young kid counts on, they go 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. But at 10, something has to change. We cannot leave it as ten loose ones, because 10 is where a brand new place value begins. So we make a trade: take those ten ones and exchange them for one single ten, a neat bar of ten.
