Christian education will not be the right choice for every family, just as no single school can be the right choice for every child. School choice recognizes that parents bear the primary responsibility for their children’s education and should have meaningful opportunities to choose a school consistent with their needs, values, and faith.

Myth: ESAs are a handout for wealthy families.

Families with significant financial resources have always had educational options. They can afford private school tuition, tutoring, specialized services, or a move to another district. ESAs help extend those opportunities to middle- and lower-income families who previously may not have been able to consider Christian education.

Iowa’s Education Savings Account program has given more parents the ability to choose an education that fits their child’s needs and reflects their family’s convictions. As school choice has expanded, so have misconceptions about how ESAs work, whom they serve, and how participating schools are held accountable.

Myth: ESAs take money away from public schools.

Fact: ESA funding follows the student. When a child leaves a public school, the district no longer bears the full cost of educating that student, but it continues to receive an average of more than $1,600 in state funding associated with that child. Research from other states also indicates that competition from school choice can encourage improvement in public schools.
