Happy WIMSE Wednesday! Today we are shouting out Amy Y. Sato and Teresita Bellido who were part of a team that developed a silicon nanochip that may be able to treat traumatic muscle loss. Using a process known as tissue nanotransfection, tissue function can be reprogrammed through a minimally invasive procedure that will enable the delivery of specific genes via a harmless electrical spark. Sato, Bellido, and their team found that muscle function improved when tissue nanotransfection was used as therapy for seven days following volumetric muscle loss in rats, earning it’s place as the first study to demonstrate that muscle tissue can be generated via nanotransfection.

Happy WIMSE Wednesday! In June of 2022, these four women were part of a team at the National Eye Institute who recently discovered more information about the rare Stargardt disease. Their research may suggest a potential therapeutic strategy for the disease. Using stem cells created from patients with Stargardt disease, the team linked a mutation in the ABCA4 gene to the effects of the disease.

This WIMSE Wednesday we are celebrating Andrea Emmanuelli!

Andrea is a second year geology major with minors in physics and math. She is a lab assistant in Dr. Knapp’s Chemical Oceanography lab, the secretary for Climbing Club at FSU, and the Campus Recreation Outdoor Pursuits Trip Leader. In Dr. Knapp’s lab, she analyzes nitrate in ocean samples.

Her favorite thing about WIMSE is “Immediately having a support system of women in STEM, women that you get to know really well during your first year because you take a class and live with them. I also love REP, this is my 3rd semester as a lab assistant and I’ve grown so much as a student and as a scientist because of it.”

Come join us Tuesday, April 5th from 4-6 pm for our annual Research Symposium, featuring our wonderful WIMSE undergraduate researchers! This event is open to everyone and all are welcome.

We missed Science Ladies Saturday, so we bring you; Science Ladies Tuesday! Today’s Science Lady is Ana Roqué de Duprey.

Ana was a Puerto Rican educator and suffragist in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. She was responsible for founding multiple female colleges in Puerto Rico, and she helped found the University of Puerto Rico. Her nickname, “Flor del Valle” (Flower of the Valley) was because of her work in botany. She wrote La Botanica Antillana which cataloged over 6000 species of Caribbean plants as well as their medicinal and agricultural uses. Besides her work in botany and education, she was an activist for women’s right to vote in Puerto Rico.

On the left is an image of Duprey’s “La Botanica Antillana.” The right is a portrait of Ana.
