Happy Faschingsdienstag! ππ₯π₯πππPieter Bruegel's "Fight Between Carnival and Lent" is a fitting image for today, Karnevals- or Faschingsdienstag (Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras's Pancake Tuesday), when the carnival season comes to an end at midnight - as it does in all carnival regions of the world, including those of Germany and Austria.

While the US is celebrating Veteran's Day and France and the UK Remembrance Day, St. Martinstag happens in Germany. Named by a military man (the Roman officer Martin, later extended to Martin Luther after the Reformation), it is originally a religious festival involving children's lantern processions and good food (goose roast and ye**ty bakesππ₯¨). Enjoy November 11!

Today has been a fateful date throughout German history. The events that have taken place today range from horrific to celebratory, from the violent anti-Jewish pogroms of 1938 to the peaceful fall of the Berlin wall in 1989.
