SoE’s Dr. Michael Martinez-Colon lead an educational research cruise (9/20-9/24) with five SoEstudents. Dr. Jeroen Ingels with two FSU students, and one student from Eckerd college were also part of the cruise.
The students had the opportunity to operate oceanographic tools and prepare sediment/water/plankton tow samples on-board of the R/V Hogarth for laboratory work. They will be instructed in different disciplines to assess environmental parameters and analyze marine biotic metrics to indicate ecological quality status of a small portion of the West Florida shelf.

Today is World Ocean Day! Here are a few interesting facts. We must do our part to protect this valuable resource.
World Oceans Day 2021: Interesting facts about ocean For global climate and weather-related natural hazards, oceans play an important role.
The ocean cover over 70 percent of the planet. Ocean gives at least 50 percentage of the planet's oxygen. They are lungs of our planet.
Ocean absorbs about 30 percent of carbon dioxide of the world, therefore giving relief from the impact of global warming.
Biodiversity depends on oceans. A lot of flora and fauna found in the ocean are a part of food cycle linked with humans.
They are a key to higher global economy. Ocean based industries and employment plays a major role in our economy.
Oceans are supporting mankind and many other organisms on Earth. Still, this fact is relevant when only 5 percent of oceans have been discovered yet. They hide a lot of secrets and wonders in their depths.
These are the alarming times to preserve our oceans and their organisms as challenges to the ocean continue to grow. Big fish population is getting depleted and coral reefs are being destroyed, as a result right from global warming to disturbances in the food cycle are increasing.
We can create and protect healthier oceans that can sustain all of us, irrespective of life anywhere in the world.
Happy Mother's Day! Let's us not forget Mother Earth!!!🙂🌍

Godfred Gakpetor, Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) doctorate student, will begin a summer internship with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy on May 10. Godfred started his education in his home country of Ghana before he moved to FAMU in Tallahassee, Florida. His background studying environmental science and agribusiness has led to his desire to dive deeper into clean energy policies and practices in the Southeast through the internship with SACE. On accepting the internship position, Gakpetor said, “The sustainability of our environment depends on our actions today.”
Good luck, Godfred, on your internship!

Help us reach our goal!
Each year, thousands of college students in America drop out with the most common reason involving financial concerns. Many higher education institutions struggle to keep their students enrolled while simultaneously dealing with budget cuts.
As a result, support to the FAMU’s School of the Environment (SoE) Emergency Student Support Fund is needed to help meet the needs of our students. In 2020, SoE retained over 90% of our graduate students largely in part to the financial contributions to the program. Any support will go a long way with retention efforts by meeting the financial needs of our students.
So join us March 25th and 26th as part of FAMU’s Day of Giving. You can contribute by texting 1887STRIKES25 to 71777. Let us all be “Champions for a Sustainable Environment.”

Title:
Florida Everglades Restoration Project
SYNOPSIS of Presentation
The Everglades are a diverse landscape with various ecological, socio-economic and cultural issues. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) was initiated by the Water Resources Development Act of 2000 with a purpose to provide for ecosystem restoration and address those other concerns. We are now 20 years into the CERP and many projects have been completed but there are many more still to do. This presentation will discuss the goals of CERP, how we work as interagency teams to plan projects, and some of the issues that have had to be overcome as well as those that remain.
Happy Day of Service! Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Join us this Friday, November 13th at 11:15am for the School of the Environment’s Weekly Seminar Series. This week’s session is presented Andrew V. Ogram with the University of Florida. Title: Cycling on the Gradient: Microbial Ecology in the Everglades. In addition to providing numerous invaluable ecosystem services, the marshes of the Water Conservation Areas (WCAs) of the historically low-nutrient eastern Everglades provide water for much of Southeastern Florida. The WCAs are also subject to a number of threats, including agricultural runoff and high mercury deposition rates. Microbial communities in the Everglades are, in large part, responsible for maintaining the water quality of the WCAs through their roles in biogeochemical cycles. The relationships between the activities of critical microbial consortia, such as greenhouse gas production and mercury transformation, and anthropogenic impacts in these areas will be discussed.
Join us this Friday, November 6 at 11:15 a.m. for the School of the Environment’s Weekly Seminar Series. This week’s session is presented by Nawfal Ezzegaghi, P.E., Deputy Director of Leon County’s Environmental Services Division. His presentation will touch on the subject of floodplains within the Leon County jurisdiction. The general areas that form these floodplains (example: lakes, ravines, closed depressions, rivers, etc.), why this feature is considered a conservation area and what that translates into vis-à-vis land development and environmental impacts. The session will also cover the County’s participation in FEMA’s flood insurance program.
