During the summer of 2021, the FSU Summer Music Camps will host their 80th year of music camps. Students come from around the world to meet FSU instructors, perform, learn and grow as musicians, and gain first-hand knowledge of what it is to be a student on the FSU campus. Camp instructors come primarily from the internationally recognized FSU College of Music faculty and its graduate students. Throughout the years, the FSU Summer Music Camps have remained true to their original 1942 intent: to provide outstanding musical experiences for students. T-N-T, he’s dynamite! Please welcome SrA Tyler Nelson Tolles to our next feature! 🥁SrA Tolles hails from Monterey, CA originally and began his collegiate musical endeavors at the University of North Texas where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance and a Minor in Music Theory. He then moved east to Florida State University where he completed his Master of Music degrees in 2016 and subsequently his Doctor of Music degree last year. 📚🎓He currently serves on the faculty at the University of North Alabama. 😯 Outside of work, SrA Tolles enjoys baking bread, arranging and writing music, gigging in the area, and spending time with his wife, Elyse, and their two fur children 🐱🐱Walter and Puddles. Tyler is “Dyno-might”! 👊

This episode features Becky Needham, flutist! Rebecca Needham graduated from the Florida State University in December 2019 with a Bachelor of Music Education in Instrumental Music Education, a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory and a Specialized Study in Flute Performance. Rebecca is an avid performer, educator, and researcher. As a flutist, she has been a finalist in the 2018 Collegiate Young Artist Competition and was selected to perform in the 2019 Piccolo Masterclass and 2020 Advanced Masterclass with the Florida Flute Association. She was also a finalist in the 2018 First Coast Wind Symphony competition. Her primary teachers include Professor Eva Amsler and Dr. Karen Large. As an educator, Rebecca Needham is a Florida certified teacher in Music K-12 after completing her student teaching internship in with the Vero Beach High School Band in Fall 2019. Rebecca was hired as a marching band staff member for the Sebastian River High School Band and Eau Gallie High School band programs and has previously worked as a camp counselor for FSU Summer Music Camps. She is Level One Orff-Schulwerk certified and is currently employed as a substitute teacher with Brevard Public Schools. As a researcher, Rebecca has taken extensive coursework in music theory and composition. In Spring 2019, she wrote and defended her undergraduate music theory thesis titled Birdsong and Motive in Three Contemporary Piccolo Works. Rebecca was also selected to present this thesis during the Undergraduate Music Research Symposium at FSU. Rebecca is very excited to perform with the Space Coast Music Project this year!

Becky is assisted by Pianist Braeden Duncan, pianist and president of SCMP! Braeden is a pianist, piano teacher, and lifelong student. In May, he graduated with his bachelor's in piano performance at Florida State University, where he studies with Read Gainsford. He will be studying with Dr. Gainsford at FSU for his Master's degree in piano performance this fall. He started taking the piano seriously at the age of 15 and is doing his best to give back and help others with what he's learning by sharing his journey on social media. He has collaborated with Brevard Symphony Orchestra Bobbe Jo Butler, Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and Boston Conservatory at Berklee Violinist Jade Alvarez-Lauto, and recorded with the band Living In Dissonance. Elective classes have been one of FSU Summer Music Camps' gems for several years now. 💎 Campers get the opportunity to learn about and improve various musical skills from conducting and composition to steel pans. 🛢

Here is a performance given by a collaboration of our World Music and Steel Pan classes two weeks ago! As you can see, students were having a blast jamming out and making music on their instruments! 🎵💃🏽✨
