🚨 June is National Safety Month! 🚨
National Safety Month is a time to raise awareness about preventing injuries and accidents at home, on the road, and in the workplace. The good news is that many accidents can be prevented with a few simple safety habits.
🏠 Keep your home safe:
✅ Keep cords tucked away and walkways clutter-free to prevent trips and falls.
✅ Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly and replace batteries at least once a year.
✅ Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit at home and in your vehicle.
✅ Ensure stairways have sturdy handrails and adequate lighting.
🚗 Practice road safety:
✅ Slow down and stay alert, especially in neighborhoods, school zones, and construction areas.
✅ Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
✅ Avoid distractions and always wear your seatbelt.
🦺 Stay safe at work:
✅ Follow safety procedures and use equipment properly.
✅ Wear appropriate protective gear and footwear.
✅ Speak up when you notice unsafe conditions.
📋 Be prepared for emergencies:
✅ Create or update your family emergency plan.
✅ Know evacuation routes and meeting locations.
✅ Keep emergency supplies on hand and practice your plan regularly.
Safety is everyone's responsibility. Small actions today can prevent injuries and save lives tomorrow. Let's work together to make every month a safe month!

Foundation School Nutrition Education Program Recap
The first session at The Foundation School has officially come to an end, marking a meaningful and engaging experience for our first-grade students.
Over the past few weeks, students explored the different food groups and learned how each one plays an important role in helping their bodies grow, stay energized, and remain healthy. Through interactive lessons and discussions, students gained a better understanding of the importance of eating a variety of foods and making balanced choices in their daily meals.
Program Highlights
Students were introduced to the five food groups and learned to identify common foods within each category.
Hands-on activities helped reinforce concepts, allowing students to connect what they learned to their everyday eating habits.
Interactive discussions encouraged students to share their favorite foods and explore healthier alternatives.
Lessons emphasized the benefits of trying new foods and building colorful, balanced plates.
Throughout the sessions, students demonstrated curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. It was inspiring to see their confidence grow as they began to make connections between nutrition and their overall well-being.
This program not only provided foundational nutrition knowledge but also helped foster positive attitudes toward healthy eating at an early age. We are proud of the students' participation and engagement and look forward to continuing to support their learning journey.

🌊 FAMU Launches Third Annual Summer Student-Teacher Water Resources Program 🌱
Florida A&M University is proud to celebrate the third year of its Summer Student-Teacher Water Resources Program, led by Dr. Katherine Milla and Dr. Daniel Solis, with support from Extension Agent Linda Sapp. The program is sponsored by the FAMU Center for Water Resources and the NSF-funded CASFER center.
Over two weeks, undergraduate students and local teachers gained hands-on experience in the field, lab, and classroom—exploring how urban communities use and impact water resources. A key focus: understanding nitrogen and its role in water systems, from fertilizers to urban runoff.
This year’s cohort brought together students from FAMU and Florida State University, teachers from FAMU DRS, and even a nonprofit leader—creating a dynamic learning environment.
Participants explored topics like:
💧 Water resource management
♻️ The nitrogen circular economy
🗺️ Mapping surface water flow
🧪 Collecting and analyzing water samples
They also took part in real-world field experiences, including visits to the Thomasville Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Tallahassee watershed, and Wakulla Springs.
“Understanding how water moves through urban environments is essential to protecting both human health and ecosystems,” said Dr. Milla.
Dr. Solis added, “Water resources are deeply connected to economic development, agriculture, and community resilience. Programs like this help prepare future leaders to tackle these challenges.”
👏 This program continues to strengthen partnerships between universities, K–12 educators, and the community—while building the next generation of environmental leaders.
