September is National Preparedness Month, which serves as a reminder to plan and prepare for disasters and emergencies that could impact you and your family. The 2022 theme is “A Lasting Legacy: The life you’ve built is worth protecting. Prepare for disasters to create a lasting legacy for you and your family.”
There are three easy steps to keep your family safe during disasters: get a kit, make a plan, and be informed.
Build an emergency kit with things like water, non-perishable food, and essential medications to last for at least 5 days. Be sure to include other items needed such as a battery-operated flashlight and radio.
Develop a plan so that your family knows how to communicate during an emergency and what to do if you need to evacuate.
Stay informed on what emergency situations may occur where you live, and how you will get important information when emergencies occur.

Vonda Richardson, Director of FAMU Cooperative Extension, has been elected to the Board on Agriculture Assembly (BAA) Policy Board of Directors as the 1890 Representative and voting member for the 1890 Region. The Policy Board of Directors (PBD) of the BAA takes appropriate action on key matters affecting the interest of the member institutions of the Assembly and is responsible to the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) for the management of Assembly affairs. The BAA is a unit of the APLU Commission on Food, Environment, and Renewable Resources to promote all phases of agriculture (food, environment, agriculture, natural resources, and international) in the state universities and land-grant colleges of the states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the territories of the Pacific, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Ms. Richardson is also the current Chair of the Association of Extension Administrators.
