A lesser-known term gaining attention this Mental Health Awareness Month is high-functioning anxiety.
โOne important thing to clarify is that high-functioning anxiety isn't a formal diagnosis. It's a way of describing people whose anxiety is largely hidden by outward competence. These individuals may look successful, organized and driven, but internally they experience chronic worry, self-doubt, anticipatory fear, and a persistent sense that they're one mistake away from failure."
Brad Schmidt is a Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor in the FSU Department of Psychology and director of the Anxiety and Behavioral Health Clinic at Florida State University. He's available for interviews on high-functioning anxiety.

In 2004, Fuqua Hohmeister received a bachelor's in psychology (FSU Department of Psychology), and she went on to earn a master's in rehabilitation counseling in 2006 (FSU Anne's College). With two decades of experience in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities, Fuqua Hohmeister presently serves as president of HH Strategies, an operations consulting company.
"As an undergraduate, I gained academic research experience through my Honors in the Major thesis. I also completed a minor in Italian studies (FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics), took classes in art history and humanities, and spent a semester at the FSU Florence Study Center in Italy (FSU International Programs). My liberal arts education, combined with my neuroscience and psychology coursework, helped me become a successful and well-rounded creative thinker, writer and problem solver."
Founded in 1876, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary membership organization of professionals and others with expertise in intellectual and developmental disabilities.
