Our 4-H Year is Off to a Wild Start!

The Wild About the Woods club is already hard at work preparing for the Wildlife Ecology Contest! At our latest meeting, members practiced identifying wildlife using pelts, skulls, and tracks, building the observation skills needed by wildlife biologists and outdoor enthusiasts.

Take a look at these photos and see if you can identify the animals!

🔍 Hint #1: One of these animals leaves behind evidence of its presence long after it has moved on, often changing the landscape in ways visible from above.

🔍 Hint #2: The other is a master of adaptation, thriving in habitats ranging from remote woodlands to the edges of busy neighborhoods.

🔍 Bonus Hint: Pay close attention to the teeth. One skull belongs to an animal that specializes in cutting through tough plant material, while the other is built for a much more varied diet.

If you bought roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) at our Plant Sale in May, it should start to set fruit soon. The plant begins to bloom as the day shortens, so it usually blooms about mid-September, or near the autumnal equinox. After the petals fall off the flowers, it takes another 10 days to two weeks for the calyx to plump up and be ready for harvest. The calyx is the collection of sepals at the base of the flower. It is usually green, but on the roselle plant it is cranberry red. This fruit, made of the calyx, will be ready to harvest around October or November. After the first harvest, the leaf node will put out another bloom and calyx, giving you two sets of harvest from the same node. Harvesting fruit can last up to 6 weeks. September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. About 100,00 Americans, many of them Black/African American, have sickle cell disease. This month is a time to learn, donate blood, support research, and to stand with those impacted by this disease.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. What is blood cancer?

Blood cancer is when different blood cells grow out of control. There are many types of blood cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. It can start in the bone marrow, where new blood cells are made, or in the lymphatic system, which helps the body fight infections.

It is recommended that during the spring/summer months, your thermostat be set between 75 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. During the fall/winter months, the recommendation is between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
