For almost 20 years, the German School of Tallahassee has been a community resource promoting the German language and bringing together those interested in German culture. We are grateful to the students, teachers, and volunteers that have supported the school through those years. At this time, however, the German School of Tallahassee will no longer be offering classes. We hope one day that the school’s efforts will be reignited, but until that time, we will be closing down our website. For the time being, this Facebook and email will be our primary methods of communication.
Thank you again for your support,

Some information about a new research fund set up in the name of Maura Binkley. Maura was a student of German at FSU and an intern at the German school. She was killed in the tragic shooting at a Yoga studio in Tallahassee last year.
Maura's Voice Research Fund (Maura's Voice) will serve to realize the vision of deepening the scientific understanding of and the effective responses to the epidemic of gun violence in America. Maura's Voice will champion a unique and robust focus on researching and responding to the complex causes and effects of firearm violence. The Fund will develop knowledge for and test innovative approaches to forensic evaluation, management, treatment, and prevention strategies, as well as for sound policy development and implementation.
The Great Give is a campus wide fundraising event, and this year the College of Social Work has chosen Maura's Voice Research Fund as the beneficiary of all money raised.

Several of the advanced students at the German School will be taking the DSD German Language Exam this semester. Part of the exam is a spoken section (Mündliche Prüfung) where the test-taker goes through a 5 minute interview and gives a 5 minute talk in German. To help the "Prüflinge" with the exam, I am posting a video of someone taking it.
The Prüfling is an actress who makes some of the common mistakes in vocabulary, grammar and actions that a test taker might make. It would be a good exercise for text takers (or any student of German) to look at this:
1. to see what such an exam is like, and 2. to see if you can catch her mistakes. (Konrad)

We were talking about German films that might be available over the web in the advanced class last Saturday. Netflix has the German mini-series "Babylon Berlin" in German and English, and you can choose subtitles in either language. I would suggest German if you need subtitles, as following the English distracts from you listening to the German.
There are several other German TV shows and movies on Netflix, and several non-German offerings that have German dubbed in. Just look for "German" in the search box on Netflix.
[Note that some of the films and mini-series on Netflix have graphic violence and mature content.]
With heavy hearts, we lost one of our own last night. This contagious smile and great personality will be forever missed! Please keep Maura’s family in your thoughts ❤️

The German School Tallahassee enjoys the dance floor.

You may have noticed that the German School has a new logo. It is a stylized edelweiss. The small white flower blooms among the rocks high in the Alps and is a symbol of perseverance and dedication in German, Austria, Switzerland and other European countries.
Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a song about the flower for their musical "The Sound of Music." Although it is not the traditional folk song that many Americans think it is, it was always one of Dr. Plendl's favorite songs.

We are sad to report the passing of the director, and one of the founders of the German School, Dr. Hans Plendl. His work and dedication in helping to start the school, and in keeping in going, despite many difficulties, are greatly appreciated. He will be missed by all.

Die Austausch - Studenten aus Ingolstadt
About the Program
The Deutsche Schule Tallahassee (GST) has accepted an invitation from the Berufsoberschule in Ingolstadt, Bavaria for an annual exchange of students. The exchange begins this Fall Semester with seven German students coming to Tallahassee for two weeks. The exchange is supported in part by the Goethe Institute through its German American Partnership Program (GAPP).
The German visitors will be in their last year before graduating from their school with a degree similar to the American AA degree. From the American side, GST interns and FSU undergraduates with sufficient German language preparation will be eligible to participate in the exchange between the Spring 2014 and Summer Semesters.
The German visitors will be here from Monday- September 2nd to Monday September 16th. They will stay with GST families, and they will be matched with GST interns studying at FSU. During the week they will attend classes with these students (at the instructor’s discretion) in the morning and early afternoon and attend GST classes on Saturday mornings. In the afternoons, evenings and weekends they will spend time either with the FSU students or with their host families.
There are some planned activities that all participating students and host family members are welcome to take part in, such as dinners, visits to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, local museums, special FSU and City events as well as weekend trips to Lake Bradford and the coast.
The German School would like to thank all those who have donated books or teaching materials to the school, among them
Barbara & Knut Rittweger, Bettina Teson, Annie Voisin, Eberhard Roeder, Isela Castrejon, Stefan Bresch, and most recently Joe Ritchie and Ingrid Haines.
