CIS strives to foster excellence in teaching, research and service.

Florida A&M University's Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) department was established, first, as the School of Data Processing, in September 1967, then later, the Department of Computer Information Systems in the 1980's, and now its current name. This page was created to connect the Rattler Alumni with current FAMU CIS students, as well as to promote upcoming events, outstanding accomplishments, and other activities.

Operating as usual

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

For those who were inquiring, I wanted to provide an update on my mom, Barbara Black. Some of you heard she was ill and asked me about it.

Last month Mrs. Black was diagnosed with lymphoma - a type of cancer. She has been in the hospital and rehab centers for several months, but has been home for the last few weeks and is recovering. She's going through chemo but things are going well.

I'm posting this because I know many of you love and care about her, and I'm asking for your prayers as she continues to get better. She's celebrating a 90th birthday in September of 2024, and we want her to be able to see many more! God is able and faithful!

- Jason Black

Hey CIS alums - this is Dr. Black. Just letting you all know we have a group of students (CIS, SBI and my son who's at TCC but planning to transfer to FAMU for Business Analytics) coming to Atlanta over the next two weeks - for Black is Tech Conference (Aug 7-11) and BDPA (Aug 17-18). I'm letting those of you in Atlanta know or if you will be at any of these events in case you wanted to hook up with them and chop it up.

I'll share their emails and cells in this group later this week. Hopefully y'all can connect while they're there either time. 🐍 🐍

Very sad news - the CIS family lost one of our own. Long time adviser Ms. Julia Jones, who passed March 21.

Greetings all students and faculty,

We are inviting you to participate in our Annual HBCU Data Science Consortium Data Science Celebration, to be held both in-person and online on March 31 - April 1, 2023.

The theme this year is "Data Science for Social Impact". Come join us to hear from researchers and leaders in the fields of data science and analytics, as we discuss topics of interest to the HBCU community and our partners concerning academic development, research advancement, professional pathways, and synergistic collaborations, around the viewpoint of how data can be used for social good.

Our outstanding speakers this year include:
Dr. Talitha Washington, Director, Atlanta University Center Consortium Data Science Initiative
Dr. Stephanie Miller, Project Director, US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights
Shari Tucker, Project Manager, US Department of State (Office of Management Strategy & Solutions Center for Analytics)
Jeremy Lawson, CEO & Co-Founder, Salynt
Dr. Ralph Watkins, Peachtree Associate Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth, Columbia Theological Seminary
and more!

Additionally, there will be a Student Poster Session, where students will present their research in data science or related topics. A Call for Student Posters is attached.

We are very excited to be hosting this event. Please share with any faculty, students, alumni, or colleagues at HBCUs that you may know of in your research circles that could benefit from participation in this event with us.

To find out more about the Celebration and to register, please visit http://www.hbcu-dsc.org/conference.html

Update on Service for Malcolm Barnes:

I talked to Martin Barnes today. They’re having a memorial service for his father, Malcolm Barnes (former CIS chair and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha) on Monday at 12 Noon at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church here in Tallahassee. He is working on trying to get them to stream the service for those of us that can’t make it (I teach back to back from 12 to 3:30). I’ll share the info if he shares that but you can also visit http://www.betheltally.org

Home Welcome members, visitors, and friends! This is the day that the Lord has made and we shall rejoice and be glad in it. The Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, along with me, Reverend Dr. R.B. Holmes, Jr., and First Lady, Dr. Gloria Price Holmes, joyfully welcome you to the Lord’s house and to expre....

CIS Family - once again we have lost one of our great leaders, Mr. Malcolm Barnes, former Chair in CIS in the 90s.

Mr. Barnes was a good friend and father of my roommate, Martin Barnes, and was chair when I enrolled in CIS. I learned a lot of what I know about administration and management from working with him. He was also an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a deacon at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He has reunited with his wife, Dr. Barbara Barnes, who passed a few years ago.

Our prayers are with Martin, Marcus and the Barnes family. 🙏🏾🖤💛

RIP sir. And Happy birthday.

Next Saturday, October 23 from 2-3pm, Guo Gu will conduct a memorial service for Chris Cruikshank, a member of our community, who passed away on September 25th due to complications of COVID-19. During the service, we will celebrate his life with prayers, share stories and memories of Chris, and conduct a memorial service with a green earth burial of the ashes. Below is a photo collage of him and the details of the program.
