CIS strives to foster excellence in teaching, research and service.

Florida A&M University's Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) department was established, first, as the School of Data Processing, in September 1967, then later, the Department of Computer Information Systems in the 1980's, and now its current name. This page was created to connect the Rattler Alumni with current FAMU CIS students, as well as to promote upcoming events, outstanding accomplishments, and other activities.

Building Ramps and Pathways to Data Science in K-12, Minority-Serving Institutions, and Two-Year Colleges 09/05/2024

Greetings,

My co-authors, Rachel Saidi, Helen Burn, Ben Baumer, Zarek Drozda, Debzani Deb, and I wrote a recently published article which explores diverse pathways to data science for various groups, including high school students, those in two-year colleges, and students in small colleges and minority-serving institutions. The article identifies opportunities and challenges associated with pursuing data science for students in these sectors, including factors such as building partnerships and awareness of the field and difficulties in establishing articulation agreements between institutions.

Special shout out to the Academic Data Science Alliance (ADSA), and in particular, Micaela Parker, for providing the platform for us to collaborate on this paper!

We hope you find our paper valuable as you consider building diverse pathways to data science!

Hey CIS family - as I'm sure you have heard, a tornado has come through Tallahassee and has hit the Southside of town very hard, including the campus. As you can see in the photo, for those who know, our beloved SunRoom is no more.

The second pic is the Grand Ballroom.

Please pray for the FAMU family and we'll keep you posted on any updates.
