To save, protect, preserve and restore Gibbs Cottage, the home of Florida A&M University founder Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs Gibbs Hall is named for Gibbs.

Gibbs Cottage, built in 1892, was the home of Reconstruction-era FL State Representative Thomas Van Renssalaer Gibbs, who introduced the legislation to found present-day Florida A&M University, then the State Normal College for Colored Students. Gibbs built the cottage for his family, included his wife, Alice Menard Gibbs, and their 11 children. The home also belonged to famed FAMU Math Professor
