Say hello to Molli Derfuss, a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a Dual Degree in Art History and Religion with a minor in Chinese. Travelling to Shanghai, China this summer, Molli has several goals: language immersion and study, cultural re-engagement, and ethnographic research.

“My return will be emotional but beautifully vital to understanding and creating for myself my cultural identity.”

Molli hopes to blend language learning with rich cultural engagement, while creating a documentary about her return to China and lived experience, including interviews with “Adoption voices” both in the States and in China.

⭐️ Student Star Spotlight!⭐️

Brooke Hagans is a biological sciences major involved in several labs conducting research on animal behavior and marine ecology. As a 2025 IDEA Grant recipient, she is investigating how parasitic accumulation contributes to physiological stress and energy expenditure in Atlantic stingrays during pregnancy — a project she developed after observing high parasite prevalence while working at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory. Hagans also works within Professor Emily DuVal’s lab, where she analyzes 26 years of behavioral data to map the social networks and male status dynamics of lance-tailed manakins.

Beyond the laboratory, Hagans supports the FSU and Tallahassee communities by volunteering with the FSU Animal Society and walking dogs for Champs Chance. After she completes her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue a doctoral degree at Auburn University in Alabama under the supervision of Professor Geoffrey Hill and become a research professor.

This summer, Lauren Yoakum is embarking on an extended field work trip at both FSU and Princeton-based sites to collect data from both plant and vertebrate fossils. By looking at patterns of the morphological and environmental traits that enabled survival, she hopes to earn a glimpse into how today’s fast-acting extinction event may also impact different non-extinct species. Ultimately, her project will highlight trends in species survivability, what these results imply for future environmental change, and solutions that can improve resilience in the most vulnerable species.
