The Premedical Office at Florida A&M University provides systematic and comprehensive application advice/support to FAMU students (regardless of major) who are interested in careers in the health field. The term "premed” refers to a minimum schedule of required/recommended courses for students applying to professional degree programs in medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, and related health fields.

Due to the significant number of students interested in medical, dental, etc. school at FAMU, activities conducted by FAMU's Premedical Office are comprehensive and highly structured, conducted in a group setting. Additionally, worksheets or handouts are distributed with pertinent information. The following are some of the types of support currently provided by FAMU’s Premedical Office:

Individual meetings with a Premedical Adviser are designed to keep students informed and be competitive in the medical, dental, etc. admissions application process.
Weekly emails regarding premed advising activities, summer programs, volunteer opportunities, recruitment visits, scholarships, etc. NOTE: Premed Office emails are sent only to students who are registered and maintain updated email addresses with the Premed Office.
Provide guidance and assistance in choosing courses to maximize competitiveness for acceptance into health professions schools.
Provide guidance in assessing progress towards fulfilling the requirements for entry into health profession schools.
Provide extensive guidance in exploring summer activities that offer relevant experience in the health professions.
Step-by-step assistance, by way of a strategic application timeline, with completing the application process for health professions schools (beginning freshman year at FAMU).
Assistance with letters of evaluation to support applications to summer programs and health professional schools.
Assistance with preparing for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), and other entrance exams.
Visits to FAMU by health professionals and representatives from medical, dental, and other health professions schools.
Premedical Advisor serves as an advisor to several premed clubs and organizations, designed to inspire students to pursue a career in medicine or related health professions career.

Damilola E. Ologunagba will be one of more than a dozen FAMU students graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy degree, and one of more than 440 students graduating tonight at the university’s 6 pm summer commencement exercise July 29, 2022 in the Al Lawson Center.

Ologunagba, age 25, will earn her Ph.D. in Physics. Her journey was a bit different than most FAMU students.

Ologunagba came to FAMU through a partnership the university has with the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Nigeria, that allows eligible, and willing, students to complete their final year of undergraduate studies in Tallahassee before beginning graduate studies.

Ologunagba attended FUTA for four years before transferring to FAMU and earned her bachelor’s in physics in 2016. She started pursuing her Ph.D. in 2018, and had some family issues which forced her to take a year off. Undeterred, she came back and completed what is usually a six-year program in four years.

Supportive faculty
She credits the support of major professor Shyam P. Kattel, Ph.D, with whom she published four articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, for embracing her goals from the beginning.

“We have three more articles currently under review in various high-impact journals,” Kattel said.

Ologunagba is Kattel’s first Ph.D. student, together they have worked on projects about the computational design of materials for hydrogen generation and ammonia synthesis.

“He was the best adviser anyone could have. He mentored and encouraged me to put in the work. He was always very helpful. He always had an idea of what I can do,” she said.

While at FAMU, Ologunagba met her husband Olumide Abioye, a fellow FUTA alum, who was a master’s degree student when they met. He gave her a ride to campus on her first day. They started dating at the end of spring 2017 and married four years later. Abioye earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in 2019 and now works for Airbus, the European aerospace giant in Leesburg, Virginia.

Upon graduation, today, Ologunagba, has job offers from Intel and Chevron.

Greetings Rattlers, FAMUly, and friends! It’s FAMU’s third annual Day of Giving April 21-22, 2022. Last year, we raised 7K and were able to provide students an opportunity to attend several research conferences. Thank you! Let’s continue to support our students at 1887strikes.com or text 1887strikes15 to 71777.

Funding Campaign for this year!!!!
The College of Science and Technology is requesting funds for the Kaplan MCAT [Medical College Admission Test] Prep program. The Kaplan MCAT prep program has improved student success in achieving higher scores and getting accepted to medical school. Furthermore, interest in the MCAT opportunity among students has garnered much attention across campus and increased the competitive nature of the student selection process.

The cost of the program is $1,250 per student. The course includes, but is not limited to live class sessions, video instruction, 16 practice tests, and related items intended to prepare students for the MCAT. Due to the price of the MCAT program and limited financial resources, students are unable to purchase the Kaplan MCAT Prep course. Since starting MCAT PREP, our demand for qualified students has doubled from the ten (10) we have been able to cover, therefore, our overall goal is to raise $50,000 to satisfy the increasing demand to offer MCAT PREP.
