We're so happy to welcome Dr. Paulette Curtis to FSU Undergraduate Studies as an associate dean and the new Honors Program director!
Is the cost of textbooks stressing you out? FSU Libraries can help.
Each year the Honors Program recognizes graduating seniors who have distinguished themselves by completing three exceptional, academic achievements: first, they have maintained a 3.9 GPA or higher earning Summa Cum Laude; second, they challenged themselves and enriched their education by completing the University Honors Program; third, they have earned Honors in their Major by completing an honors thesis.
Florida State University has so many Study Spots for you to get down to business for Finals Week. Here is a little guide to diversify where you grind for your finals! For more information, check out studentaffairs.fsu.edu/finals
We had a wonderful initiation event Tuesday for the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated.
Since its founding, Phi Kappa Phi has initiated more than 1.25 million members into its ranks; all of these members have received emblems and certificates of membership. However, Phi Kappa Phi is much more than an emblem and a line on a resume. It is a global network comprised of the best and brightest from all academic disciplines - a community of scholars and professionals building an enduring legacy for future generations
We were finally able to hold this wonderful event in person last night. It is a celebration of our Florida State University Unconquered Scholars, who have experienced foster care, homelessness, relative care or ward of the State status. The banquet celebrates the scholars, the senior class graduating, the staff, the faculty and the all-important donors who make the program such a success.
Under the caring, excellent leadership of Lisa Jackson, the Unconquered Scholars Program provides an array of support services designed to help these scholars succeed, which they do!
As a bonus, there was artwork created by the scholars with an explanation of each. Our photographer (me) missed a few of the art pieces because he (me) isn’t really all that great a photographer. All the pieces deserved to be shown here, they were all powerful and people were mesmerized and moved by them all night.
Congratulations seniors!

We honored our late dean, friend and mentor during a celebration of her legacy Oct. 21 at Florida State University’s Honors, Scholars and Fellows house.
Karen passed away May 4, 2020. She served as dean of Undergraduate Studies for 17 years and held a tenured position as associate professor of English.
A wonderful stained-glass window, designed by Master Craftsman Studio's Karen Pritzl was unveiled at the beginning of the ceremony to commemorate and immortalize the woman who came to define undergraduate education at FSU.
The inscription reads: “In memory of Dr. Karen Laughlin, Dean of Undergraduate Studies and tireless advocate, mentor and friend to students. Karen had envisioned bringing together great minds under one roof — that vision became the Honors, Scholars and Fellows House. Welcome!”
“We’re proud to dedicate this work today so that her light will shine in brilliant color to inspire generations of students for years and years to come,” said Craig Filar, associate dean of Undergraduate Studies and director of the Office of National Fellowships.
Associate Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Joe O’Shea, who succeeded Karen, presented the inaugural Karen Laughlin scholarship to Brendan Gonzalez, an Unconquered Scholar, hospitality and tourism student.
“We knew Karen would appreciate her legacy living on through scholarship in the programs that she championed for a student who embodied the values that she used to build her legacy. Brendan personifies the unconquered spirit — he refuses to surrender to hardships and he persists in his pursuit of knowledge, equity, and excellence.”
