For our FSUS Family,

As parents and educators, we are writing to share some very sad news about one of our long serving, beloved teachers, Ms. Bonnie Clawson. We are heart-broken to share that our beloved Ms. Clawson passed away over the December break. Her family asked that we share the news with our Florida High Family.

Ms. Clawson’s brother also asked that, if you can and feel it is appropriate, please “Add a Memory” to help her family celebrate her work here and the impact she had on so many. (See highlighted section below).
In the coming weeks, we will begin work on a special way to remember Ms. Clawson here on our campus and to honor her deep impact at Florida High.

If you need any help or support, please reach out to your students teacher(s), our Deans or our Student Services Director, Ms. Jennifer Kinney. The Memorial Service for Bonnie Clawson will be held at 312 Stadium Dr, Tallahassee, FL 32304 and will start at 11:00 AM, January 7th, 2023.

Those who are unable to attend in person, the Zoom session will start shortly before the service using the following meeting link https://fsu.zoom.us/j/93201275023. We will be recording the service for those who can’t attend at that time and a Dropbox link can be provided upon request for those who have scheduling conflicts.

After the Memorial Service, there will be a luncheon and Celebration of Life in the cultural hall at the same location as the Memorial Service.

Mason Thornton, Class of 2017

Mason R. Thornton, 2017 Florida High graduate, completed his Aerospace Engineering degree in May 2021 from the University of Central Florida. Mason has been accepted into the Aerospace Engineering Ph.D. program at UCF and begins in August 2021.

Mason has been offered a full scholarship to complete the Ph.D. through the UCF Office of Research and College of Graduate Studies. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding incoming doctoral students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, preparation, and potential for successful graduate study at UCF. The scholarship includes both graduate research and teaching assistantships.

Prior to the NRL project, Mason was a research assistant in the PERL studying Experimental Measurements of Oblique Shock Induced Reactions in Hypersonic Wedge Flow. Oblique shock waves are initiated from multiple ramp angles to facilitate shock-induced combustion (SIC). High-speed schlieren, shadowgraph, and OH chemiluminescence imaging provide visualizations of shock formation and SIC. The study has potential for the development of greater performance of engines in air-breathing and rocket vehicles; creation of shorter combustion chambers, reducing overall weight; and increase mechanical simplicity..

Mason’s most recent research is funded under a fellowship. The internship with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) aims to experimentally validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models by analyzing simulation capabilities of reacting flow in ramjet/scramjet propulsive systems. In partnership with NRL, the Propulsion and Energy Research Lab (PERL) provides a Ramjet facility in a cavity flame holder configuration, which will be the project's experimental basis. Diagnostics, such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), will derive the boundary conditions required to validate these models.
