Meet Noelle Day who is a recent graduate with a double major in Editing, Writing and Media and Linguistics! Throughout her time as a Linguistics major, she had the pleasure of engaging in research under multiple professors in FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics, and during her sophomore year she had the opportunity to join a panel at the 2024 MLA conference where she presented Conlang research, which was conducted alongside Dr. Carolina Gonzalez. Noelle's research interests focus on the intersection between linguistics, literature and folklore, which she explored further in her Honors in the Major undergraduate thesis. Noelle is excited to be pursuing an MFA in screenwriting at FSU's College of Motion Picture Arts in Fall 2026.

A new study from a group of researchers, including Dr. Thomas Juzek (FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics) at Florida State University tested six AI models and found consistent favoritism for words coming from Latin and French over those with Germanic etymologies — even more than you would typically encounter in the English language. What other preferences may exist among these chatbots? If you are curious to find out why these large language models are biased towards using certain vocabulary, visit: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/06/02/what-ai-chatbots-bias-romance-languages-tell-us-about-humanity/

Niki Navarro Gutierrez, a junior majoring in digital media production and minoring in Italian and film, will attend the University of Foreigners of Perugia in Umbria, Italy, through FSU Global Exchanges.
“I am extremely interested in the appreciation that Italy, and Europe as a whole, has for film and the resources that are put into it,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez has a passion for creating documentaries or fiction films that tell a story about the culture they portray. She says she will benefit from traveling abroad and learning from diverse communities.
“Ultimately, I hope to return from Perugia not only with greater fluency in Italian, but also with the personal insight and professional skills to pursue documentary filmmaking on an international scale,” Gutierrez said.
