In the late 1890's, early vacuum designs were pushing air instead of pulling in order to disperse dust into metal boxes. When Mr. H Cecil Booth saw this demonstrated, he wanted to test the concept of suction for vacuums. He tested this idea by going to a restaurant and respiring the seat, sucking dust into his mouth. He later experimented with different pieces of cloth to act as a filter and avoid the mouth full of dust. This laid the ground work for vacuums as we know them today.
