Gender Differences in the Relationship Between Social Support and Quality of Life Among People Living with HIV During the COVID-19 Pandemic | Women's Health Reports 01/17/2025

📢 Latest Research Article from FIRST Faculty, Dr. Liying Wang! 🌟

The COVID-19 pandemic changed how we all lived, especially with social distancing. For people living with HIV (PWH), this disruption made it harder to stay connected to their support systems– friends, family, and community–impacting their overall well-being.

Dr. Wang's new study looks at how having social support (or not) affected the quality of life for PWH during the Pandemic. The research also explored whether these effects differed depending on a person's age or gender.

Understanding these challenges helps us figure out how to better support people during tough times like the pandemic.

Dr. Liying Wang has joined the FIRST Program here at Florida State University.
Dr. Wang is an Assistant Professor at the Florida State University College of Nursing. As a clinical psychologist, her research is rooted in translational clinical science, with a strong commitment to community-engaged and participatory approaches. She utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine the social determinants of health among marginalized groups such as people living with HIV and s*xual and gender minorities. Leveraging her understanding of these communities and insights gained through close collaboration with community partners, Dr. Wang develops culturally appropriate digital psychosocial interventions that are tailored to address mental health disparities and enhance resilience.

Her research program combines clinical science with human-centered design principles to create scalable, AI-enhanced mHealth interventions. Adopting a global-to-local approach, her work in China and Southeast Asia informs the development of culturally sensitive interventions. She aims to leverage technology to improve access to mental health resources and coping skills training by harnessing the power of generative AI and embracing social media platforms, especially among underserved populations.

We are proud to have Dr. Wang a part of the FIRST initiative to transform the institutional culture at Florida State University to generate a self-sustaining scientific community dedicated to inclusive excellence!
