Florida State Eco-Reps

Florida State University Eco-Reps’ journey began in 2010 and has been making FSU a more sustainable campus ever since.

The Eco-Reps Program at Florida State University is geared towards first year and second year students who live in the residence halls. Our program is connected with the Inter-Residential Hall Council (IRHC) and works to increase sustainable initiatives, knowledge, and habits in the residential halls and across campus, in hopes that students take this knowledge about sustainability and bring it with them as they continue their college experience and adult life.

We have two ways of getting students for our program. First, one student is elected in each hall to be the Eco-Rep representative on the hall counsel for the residential hall that they live in. We get about 10 students every fall from this. The second way we get students is by advertising in the halls. We also allow non-elected residents to participate in the Eco-Reps program and help their elected Eco-Rep implement sustainable initiatives. Both the elected and non-elected Eco-Reps are expected to bring the information that they learn from our bi-weekly meetings back to their residential halls and find ways to spread the knowledge and apply it to the their halls. Besides the elected and non-elected Eco-Reps, we also have a leadership team of Eco-Reps who have chosen to stay in the Eco-Reps program for more than one year. These students live either on or off campus and help the Eco-Reps Coordinator and Eco-Reps. Each year, overall, we have about 15-20 Eco-Reps who are committed to the program. Each year, we work to find ways to increase this number so that we can reach more residents in the halls.
