Operating as usual

The evolution of play. We made fizzing Christmas tree. See the before, during and after. Then the kids took what was left and continued creating in the mud kitchen. The last photos is the play residue after they have moved on to other play.

Practiced some meaningful work this week. The kids tried their hands at stitching. It took a lot of focus and hand eye coordination. Can’t wait to see their skills grow as we practice through the year.

Our kids have been having a big family play group at school since we started the year. With the holidays we decided now was a good time to focus on families and how they can all be so different and wonderful. We made stick people families and they turned out so cute! We also are taking a survey on who lives in our house. Simple activity allowed our kids to practice counting, colors, and share with the class who lives at their house!

Creeks, waterfalls, family! Their faces say it all. It’s amazing what kids can do when given the time and space.

We will be closed as well! Everyone stay safe!

Found some amazing caterpillars in the woods today. They will be an imperial moth and an oak worm moth. Moths are better pollinators than butterflies and very important.

This week is all about seeds. As the weather changes, plants drop their seeds, and animals are storing food or searching for it. We harvested some Lima beans and observed our seeds that have been growing in the grander. We also hiked and made bracelets of seeds and other nature. Fun, easy, so much learning!

It’s always fun to have visitors in the woods. A brown snake, a spring peeper and this neat web that taught us not all spider build webs up high.

Adding to our fall garden today. We hope to show kids food doesn’t magically appear in a store and it takes a lot of care.

We knew we weren’t alone in our woods. We hear the birds, find the minibeasts, and watch the butterflies. We have seen evidence of deer and raccoons, and armadillos. But this large paw print is a mystery and proof of something larger visiting while we are away.

Shapes, spiders, and sweet potatoes. When you show up for a day at forest school you never know what you are going to get. You can guarantee your curiosity will be peaked, friendships will be made, and learning will be happening all around you.

We have been learning about our five senses all week. We took each kid on a sensory walk and let them experience their other senses without sight getting in the way.

We are in our final day of training. And today we had a Master Naturalist teach us about Florida. We found so many treasurers in our time. Many I will bring back to share. The crab holes reminded us of our armadillo holes with the blanket of sand out in front.

Day 1 in the books! We focused on the key elements of forest school, observed a school, learned all about the Timicuan Tribe, and took a foraging walk. That was just some of today.

These vines provide so many different experiences. Today was noticing the trees swing and then they were fighting he said. They are great for hanging and swinging. Nature is a great playground!

There were so many surprises in the woods today! Some creatures left us a trail of footprints. Deer and a small mammal of some sort. The fairies left us some magical color changing play-dough.

Added some herbs to the mud kitchen today. The smells, the creations, the discoveries made

Playing house gives children the opportunity to practice life skills, act our feelings and solve problems. Our new playhouse will be a great place for kids to expand on these skills.

These woods hold so much magic and wonder! These mushrooms come and go just as we do. We stop to look for them and watch the cycle of regrowth. I can not believe we have three day left of this school year. So much fun, learning and friendships happened this year in the woods
