Introducing Presentation Panel 3: “Digital culture in India: Recentering the margins”

Overview: This panel engages in a discussion about the changing nature of the popular particularly in the second decade of post-millennial India (2010-2019). In doing so, we also explore how the diffusion of digital media platforms has affected the popular and continues to shape the meanings for self and society in this digitized world. The panel, divided into three sections will highlight the role of digital media in transcending space, creating novel identities, and redefining the existing ones. The profusion of Korean culture through K-pop dramas in India, rise of diverse influencers and redefining the concept of love and marriage through dating apps are some topics of our panel discussants. The discussants will elaborate how this digital popular is empowering in the sense that it draws from both ugly and aesthetic, visualizes the struggles of the invisible, and actively engages its consumers in comparison to erstwhile-produced televised entertainment meant for passive consumption.

Announcing Our Keynote Speaker: Dr. Adil Najam, President of WWF International 🎤🌿

We're thrilled to announce Dr. Adil Najam, President of the WWF, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (formerly World Wildlife Fund) as the keynote speaker for the 10th South Asian Media and Cultural Studies Conference.

Dr. Najam is also Dean Emeritus and Professor of International Relations and Earth and the Environment at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. He was named the first De Janosi Fellow by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. In 2022-23, he was a visiting fellow at the University of Oxford’s Wolfson College and a Mahathir Mohamad Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS). He served previously as vice-chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Lahore, Pakistan.

His research and teaching interests focus broadly on public policies related to global environment and conservation. His areas of expertise include international negotiation, sustainable development, global environmental justice, human development, and the politics of South Asia and the Muslim world.

Keynote title: "Climate and Development in the 'Age of Adaptation'."

The keynote will be held at the Globe Auditorium, Florida State University on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 5:30 PM Eastern Time. There will be a reception at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.

The 9th South Asian Media and Cultural Studies Conference will begin with a keynote address by Robert Smith on Thursday, February 2 at 6.00 EST (Eastern Time).

Robert Smith, founder of Midsummer Analytics in Ottawa, Canada, is an experienced investigator and a consultant with an international reputation for his work on environmental and economic issues. He is especially known for his work developing and promoting the concept of natural capital and its use as a basis for measuring sustainable development.

Robert Smith will speak on, “Moving Beyond GDP: Telling the Real Story of National Progress.”

The keynote is co-sponsored by the FSU College of Communication & Information’s South Asian Media and Cultural Studies Conference, Florida State University College of Social Sciences & Public Policy’s Ruth K. and Shepard Broad International Lecture Series, and FSU Center for Global Engagement CGE's Engage Your World Speaker Series.

The theme for this year’s conference is “ : From Crisis to Resilience” and focuses on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. We are glad for our continued conference partnership with the Department of Media Studies, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), India.
