Highlight: Tutoring
Student: Isabel Serrano
School: Booker High School

Isabel Serrano is currently a freshman at FSU working on her major in Psychology. Her future career goal is to be a psychiatrist. Isabel says, “SSTRIDE prepared me for the workload of college and provided tutors when needed, which helped me adjust much quicker to the rigors of college workload.”

Her favorite memory of her time in the Booker High School in Sarasota County was When we had a meeting and learned to do surgical suturing from FSU medical students. She also says, “Receiving scholarships relieved the financial stress of finding a job during my first year, allowing me to fully enjoy the college experience. It also gave me the opportunity to participate in various on-campus activities and join new groups. I am truly grateful for those experiences.”

Highlight: CPR, 1st Aid, and AED Certifications

Florida State University College of Medicine’s SSTRIDE students from five counties across Florida have the opportunity each year to earn their CPR, 1st Aid, and AED certifications.

Ariana Lugo-Trejo is a sophomore majoring in Interdisciplinary Medical Science: Clinical Professions at Florida State University and a past recipient of the SSTRIDE Student Scholarship. Through this major, she plans to use her education to become an Emergency Medicine Physician. One of her favorite memories of being in SSTRIDE was working alongside doctors, assisting them in taking vital signs for the Free Sports Physical screenings for student-athletes in her community. She has strong feeling about how SSTRIDE has helped her progress in her skills,

Ariana says “In SSTRIDE, I was able to take part in career workshops, panels, guest speakers, conferences, and even field trips, each has shaped me to feel confident and prepared in wanting to pursue a career in medicine. Through each of these experiences, I have also been able to enhance my soft skills like leadership, teamwork, and communication which continue to serve me well at FSU.” She knows how valuable receiving scholarships has been for her in alleviating the stress and financial burden on her and her family.

She also shares, “As a first-generation student your mentorship and guidance truly goes a long way. I wanted to take this time to say thank you for everything that you have done for me. I’m very happy to say I will be joining Florida state university class of 2027. I could not have done this without the support from SSTRIDE and their staff. Thank you for making my dreams a reality. You helped me along the whole way, and without you, I doubt I would now be a part of the Seminole family!”
