This week’s spotlight is on .valenzuela_! She describes her practice as such:

I am drawn to the exploration of the mundane spaces that often escape our attention. My paintings and drawings aim to capture the essence of domestic interiors by utilizing blue watered down paintings on raw canvas, which impart a sense of fluidity and ephemerality. Through my use of unpredictable lines that are appearing and disappearing in chaos it aims to mirror the mental states that these spaces and objects evoke as well as offer an off-kilter perspective of them. My intention is to allow myself and others to look anew at these ordinary spaces and discover the hidden moments of tranquility, chaos, and quietness that they contain. Moments that appear, disappear and reappear within the routine of daily living. By depicting these spaces in an unadorned and direct manner, I seek to establish a sense of intimacy and familiarity. Ultimately, my aim is to present an altered perception, one that challenges our interactions and attention to these spaces and objects.

This week’s spotlight is on @! She describes her practice as such:

My studio practice explores invasive species and their environmental impact through installation work and oil painting. Are invasive species really bad for the environment or is the issue much more complicated? Is it ethical to remove them since humans released them? How are environments adapting around invasive species? Beyond exploring their environmental impact my work seeks to engage with viewers to get them to examine their intersections with nature.

Jillian is a second-year MFA candidate and a ceramic artist. Her work focuses on the symbolics between clay and the human experience. She uses patterns and texture to craft vessels made to play with one’s sensory experience and explore the relationship between our embedded habits and the everyday objects we surround ourselves with. Recently, Jillian has been focusing on communal vessels that encourage users to rely on one another and bond through shared challenges.

Check out more of her work! .heusohn

Also Rites & Passages opens Friday (1/20) at 4pm at the Working Methods Contemporary Gallery!

Come to the opening of our show Rites & Passages on January 20th at 4pm! Curated by, Kim Moran Brown , the show features multi-media work that explores what rights and passages mean to the artists and invoices the viewers to explore what rites and passages mean to them.

Rites and Passages: A right of passage. A rightful passage. A right passage. Pass on the righthand side. Pass on being right. Human rites. Rituals. Ceremonies. Celebrations. Human rights. A right to pass through without passing. A right to take up space. A right to write. Writing about passing on, passing through... Written passages. Will things pass with age? Pass. Right. Rite. Age. Pass again. What do these words mean to you?

This Friday, 02.25 at 7 pm, you are invited to attend the opening night of All About Love, a co-curated art show inspired by the writings of bell hooks. We will be exhibiting over 25 artists from all over Florida. Performances will only take place on opening night. We hope to see you there!

“The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is - it's to imagine what is possible.”

Submissions due Friday February 11th

“Love is an action, never simply a feeling.” (bell hooks)

We are looking for submissions for our show, All About Love, which is deeply inspired by bell hooks and her definitions of love. Themes of romantic, platonic, self and familial love, themes of justice, community, and belonging, themes of loss and transformation, and themes related to vessels for expressing such love are all welcome. We hope to explore with you the expansive visuality representing an often underappreciated abstract.

We look forward to seeing your submissions. Please let us know if you have any questions!
